Dorset pub closes with “immediate effect” because of soaring utility bills

  1. Won’t be the last. This time next year we’ll be lucky if there are any pubs which aren’t Wetherspoons or one of the other massive chains.

  2. what I think is that pubs are asking for subsidies so that buildings where people drink alcohol can stay open, but there is far greater need in the health service, social provision etc – if they subsidise pubs it’s going to end up paid out as dividends and bonuses, and would just become the latest private endeavour that leeches money from the tax-payer, although in this case it would be harming people by selling them alcohol, as opposed to providing utilities or transport.

  3. Geez, I hadn’t even thought about how these energy prices will impact business overheads! Really nailing that coffin shut…

  4. My old local in London is run and owned by a lovely couple. At one point they were going to sell up after 20 yeas trying to build up the place. Someone wanted to build a hotel on the site but a load of local people and politicians complained and objected to planning and the sale fell through – funnily none of those people ever drank in there.

Now they are on the ropes, working all hours for pennies on a pint and being kept afloat by B&B. They don’t have a load of resources to fall back on like chain pubs and their energy bills for an old building in winter will most likely break them. It will end up either another derelict building or they will be forced to sell to a chain who are better placed to face the oncoming storm.

This will be repeated up and down the UK and not just by pubs but by a lot of small enterprises – cafes, restaurants, shops, butchers etc. The knock on effects of this – lack of tax money, more unemployment etc will really start to bite in the new year.

  5. The petrol station near me doesn’t cool their drinks anymore because of energy bills. Not sure it’s a great idea for them to be selling warm coke though.

  6. Do people really go to pubs with covid still happening?

Sometimes I’m embarrassed to be british, must be the only country where people will risk there lives for a there booze habit

  7. Remember that areas like Dorset rely heavily on tourism too. If people stop coming down here then it will hit local businesses even harder; we have no industry outside of tourism to save the county.

  8. this sad but unfortunately i think there is going to be many more to come, the cost of living rising so much is deffo going to have a big effect on businesses, NOT GOOD

  9. Timeline of events:

    1. Covid Lockdowns shutting down hospitality
    2. 1/2 capacity pubs
    3. Pubs that integrated food to get around the “Significant meal” wording allowing them to re-open
    4. Additional lockdowns
    5. 1/2 capacity pubs
    6. Additional lockdowns closing bars and restaurants
    7. 6 months of normality
    8. Skyrocketing gas prices pushing their bills to the extreme
    9. A forceful cutting of staff to stay afloat
    10. COL crisis removing peoples extra income
    11. Pubs close forever.

Fun time to be in hospitality

  10. I’m worried for the owners of my two locals. Both took on their respective pubs and spent good amounts of money on renovations. Energy bill hikes would wipe them out.

  11. 24 billion profits made by edf power this year already. they contacted me informing me that my £138 month dd going up to £350 as of next month. I try and contact them to discuss this it suddenly goes up to £650. I spend 45min on the phone to someone from a different country sorting out my concern to be informed theybwillnconnectnme again in 2 hrs as my meter is different to what they deal with??? nothing no call. these people are destroying peoples life’s and mental health. the only way to stop this madness is refusals to pay. not some march or demo.

  12. Probably shut bc it was already doing poorly, Iv got one near me and it’s poorly run they kick you out at 9pm and they wonder why no one goes back

  13. Marstons have been hedging their electricity bills in preparation for these rises and I believe they have fixed gas prices until 2025. Marstons have around 1500 pubs.
