SF are appearing to be gaining a lot of votes (at least on second and third preference) from people trying to protest the government’s failures without actually having deeply ingrained support for SF itself. Focusing on the fact that SF has just as bad of a record in some of those key areas on a lot of issues and playing up their other downsides is a workable strategy for FG and FF to pull back some of those switchable voters even if it annoys people who likely wouldn’t vote for them anyways.
The fact that they’re heavily overusing that strategy to the point that they aren’t forming any arguments for or connections with younger voters is one of their main weaknesses and likely a large part of the reason that factions of FG in particular are fine with going into opposition for a few years to shift the pressure off themselves and be able to go on the attack once the public grows tired of a SF who don’t look like they’re going to be able to do much better in government.
