More than 100 RTÉ staff members earned more than €100,000 basic salary last year

  1. Rte has almost 2000 staff, that means roughly the top 5% earn over 100k. Probably a good bit lower than most private companies of the same size. So… sounds about right?

  2. Us ticks paying the thing, Dee gets a massive salary, a free car and a wopping pension contribution. Remind me again, it’s actually illegal if you do not pay this not the robbery some of them are at in RTE.

I say in the RTE canteen there must be some crack at how much the tax payers in Ireland are idiots. Don’t even get me started on the tax dodging that must go on with these shell companies the likes of Duffy has in operation.

  3. Remind Dee Forbes this when she comes out with a cap in her hand for more money, or to fund Amy Hubermans latest vanity “i want to be the irish bridget jones” project (fails every time) or various american tv imports that are 6 months behind other stations/streaming services

  4. Were all of them technically ‘staff’.

Iirc, Tubridy and many others are hired as contractors so legally they’re not RTÉ ‘staff’.
That’s how they circumvent salary caps.

  5. Not including the self employed stars. Probably 10-15 ☆ stars? 200,000 – 450,000. How can a badly run organisation hold any other organisation to account. Revenue just took a million from them on the self employed/staff scam. Skullduggery at the top and bottom.

  6. Have a friend who works there, he says the money being spent on stuff that you wouldn’t even think of. RTÉ Gold, with high paid staff and sfa listeners. And 2FM gets a lot of cash for stuff, that doesn’t come back in advertising.

  7. 90% of the programmes they air are repeats. Excluding the news, live matches etc. Why the hell would anyone pay for that tripe? I stopped watching rte years ago, when they briefly started becoming something akin to a North Korean news channel playing down the water protests. And as for the stale turd that’s the Late Late show, that prehistoric dinosaur of light entertainment needs to extinct pronto.

  8. Alot of people who try to criticize RTE get thrown into the anti vaccine, RTE is a virus bin. But RTE is one of the most biased news wise and also alot of their production is dogshit compared to todays standards. All you have to do is look at the new years program earlier this year

  9. I think I’d reserve judgment until I understand what those people do and the kind of skills and experience they bring to the table.

It’s easier to be pissed off tho 😂

  10. I’ll present the news upside-down on a drumkit every evening for 100k a year, no bother chief. Strap me in, at least it’ll be different.

  11. It dose put a bad taste in your mouth reading this especially when you look at the output they products.

A full review of RTE operations should be carried out under a number of headings

1 Location: Par from News & Current affairs dose RTE need to be based in Dublin, buy and build a greenfield site somewhere in the midlands.

2 Staffing: There’s a huge issue with staffing in RTE, lets start with nepotism as someone else posted Lottie Ryan has no business to be on-air, but shes just the thin edge of the wedge. Between Ray Darcy getting his wife a job as a producer on his radio show (while she is a experienced producer, the job was unadvertised which is the core of the issue). The only way to combat this is a strong anti-nepotism policies which would have a drastic effect on staffing.

Now on to the Unions speak to any freelancer or those who work in the private sector of media and broadcast and the Unions of RTE is great for the staff, less so for everyone else. Roles are strictly regulated, with little or no multi-skilled operators which is the norm in most other broadcasters. They basically strangled any development of staffing roles to keep pace with the broadcasting landscape.

Recruitment issue is another that lands under staffing, RTE seem to champion internal first, meaning a staff camera person can apply for a job as a vision mixer while a external applicant with more experience in the role is less likely to get the role then the internal person.

Lastly RTE have no intern program

3 Programming: its lackluster if not downright lazy, the few good shows have been riding the Gangland trope for over 8 years by now, they can’t do comedy (the online offering Free Graff is good which hopefully will transfer to a show on tv). They reuse the same people someone mentioned Amy Huberman above in this thread and summed it up perfectly. It seems the same people have been greenlighting shows are the same people who have been in there riles for far to long.

I also have to point out the pure hypocrite of having Jerry Ryan as one of the hosts of Operation Transformation

  12. That would be a dream come true for me to make that much. I could pay off all my debt in a few years, buy a house, send my kids to good schools. But I doubt it would ever happen, you’re just stuck in the class you’re born in.

  13. It’s George Hamilton on lyric that gets me. Basically sounds like he throws on a greatest hits playlist of classical pieces and then looks up Wikipedia to get a few lines on each of them, coupled with the usual hellos to Mary and Paddy. Anyone, literally anyone could do what he does here and he is gets paid close to 200k. Give his lyric gig to a struggling classical musician who knows their stuff and can bring listeners through some of the interesting technical aspects of the pieces. It’s a time filler to justify some of his pay and indulge his interests. Tax payers and listeners deserve better than this.
