Google translate doesn’t really make sense to me, it says “cake” or “pie”, but I don’t think it’s either. A pie will have meat in it aka “pork pie”, and a cake doesn’t seem right either, though I’m not a Baker or chef etc. See attached picture for the delicious poppy pyragas.
Any help/pointers appreciated thanks.

  1. Pyragas translates to cake. It also can translate to pie in the American sense — as in apple pie or cherry pie.

    Meat pie is more of a pyragaitis.

  2. Pyragas and Tortas are cakes – Tortas is like an American style birthday cake. Pyragas is all other type cakes, dense cakes – and pies.

  3. Depends but when I was living in Uk everything with icing was cake, everything without but similar to cake – pie of some sort. With pies they usually have specific name as in meat pie, blueberry pie, custard pie and etc.

  4. What is that made out of? I thought it was meat loaf lol. Layered sweets with icing and such would be a cake 🎂 a pie is the things you have a crust for and put a little bread lid on. Pies don’t have to have meat, I love apple pie 🥧

  8. Atsimenu my mom called all her coffee cake type pastries ‘pyragai’. Maybe it’s a regional distinction. I don’t recall the name for pie. Tortai were served for occassions and company, pyragai were for everyday dessert if we were lucky.

  9. I’m an American and that looks almost more like a bread pudding than a cake. We don’t have a specific term for a soaked cake (it looks saturated?). I’d love to know what is in it!
