Pubs warn of closure as energy bills face 300% rise

  1. Additional info: all business will be affected. Our office renewed 2 months ago at 73p per kwh with £2.30 standing charge. I believe its now £1 per kwh right now. There are energy brokers for businesses but they do not have any better deals than standard rates. Its going to kill alot of companies, or put them into debt with energy companies.

  2. Even if they manage stay open it’s not like people will have the spare cash through winter to justify spending on going out.

    > CF Industries, the UK’s largest CO2 producer, recently announced that it would temporarily stop production at one of its plants because rising energy prices made it too expensive to continue.

And this will have a massive knock on affect too.

  3. People have short memories;

    https://yorkmix.com/why-is-a-much-loved-york-landlord-being-forced-from-his-pub-and-his-home/

Pub leaseholders like Punch Taverns put pub landlords under incredibly punitive contracts, where the rents are artificially high & the pub is forced to only take beer from them at an inflated high mark up (around 110%). Also the pub is not allowed to sell any other type of beer that might be cheaper for the pub. So its a failed business model. Greene King is also guilty of this. Dont believe a word that comes out of the mouths these type of pub franchises.

If memory serves Joe Lycett done a story on this business practice last year.

  4. Maybe that’s all part of the plan ?

Small and medium enterprises will fold and the big business will buy them at throw away prices . Then the govt will announce some steps to curb energy prices

  5. The Tories will totally and utterly decimate every single sector of the economy to preserve the profits of billion pound energy companies, “party of business and fiscal responsibility” my entire hole.

  6. These are greedy mass brewery /landlord forks who’ve been gouging tied pubs for years with stupid rents and barrel prices. Only now the publicans won’t be able to pay at all are they up in arms.

  7. This seems like a credible threat but I feel I’ve always been hearing about pub closures, going back 20 years or something. I recall x number of pubs closing every week being a thing.

There were about 55k pubs in 2008 and around 48k pubs in 2020.

It seems hard to find out what’s the expected number to remain open going forward.

  8. Most independent restaurants and pubs will go bust and the choices for eating out will be a cold McDonald’s followed by a pint at a characterless Greene King pub.

  9. Surprised it’s just the energy bills that they think will close them.

Most around me now have £5-£7 pints.

  10. I’m a teacher, our school budget has been blown out the water by staff pay rise – that’s before we even worry about the energy cost going up.

  11. I mean…the pubs in London have effectively been selling beer and food at a loss whilst paying their staff really well. No wonder they’re going under! (Yes, sarcasm).

  12. Turning us into a 3rd world country just for the greed of the wealthy few. This is a class war and a cull of humanity. 🤬

  13. It’s a real pity that the politicians won’t have any pubs left to use on their campaign trails, keeping up the tradition of PM candidates pulling pints for the common folk. Maybe instead they’ll enjoy sharing a 4 pack on a park bench next to the people who have been booted out of their homes because they can’t afford to live there anymore.

  14. An economic crisis is imminent. People can’t afford their rent, businesses can’t afford their operating costs, what is next? Answer: businesses have to start laying people off, people are left with even less money than before, spend less, businesses suffer more, and on and on we roll into a crisis.

  15. I don’t understand how energy prices keep going up and up? They are recording record profits so why do they keep going up? Why doesn’t the government do anything? It’s like they are wanting this to happen and it’s all part of the plan

  16. My wife works in a school. They are talking about cutting down the days they are open because they have been quoted 100k for bills that used to be 20k.

There is no way the government let’s this happen without riots on the streets.

  17. Man, my family will lose everything by next year if it stays like this. We just can’t afford this shit, knowing almost all of our income is going on bills already and it’s about to cost more than we earn soon is absolutely terrifying. Mentally I’m not sure I can take it personally, I just hope my mum is okay through all of this

  18. Tories are crushing the country as much as they can because they know it’s over for them.

They’re letting energy companies rake in as much money as possible because they know nationalisation is on the horizon now.

Tories are fucking vermin, always have been, and now that the end is near and they don’t have any realistic means of winning another term, they’ve stopped giving a fuck and have reverted to their truest form. Absolute fucking vermin.
