Ditching Paschal Donohoe from EU’s top table to redeem FF is parochial politics

  1. Swapping him for anybody isn’t a clever move. It’s Fianna Fail not thinking of the bigger picture (suprised Pikachu)

  2. Sheahan is a malicious little snipe full of shit. The most important man in Europe lives in Cabra Park – bollix. The only thing that matters is the Council of which Pascal is not a member. All the strategic decisions happen there.

  3. Im sure there are several clever people in the government. I know they’re good at things like diplomacy – Irish governments (,and people) tend to be. Theyve also been good at securing foreign investment .

However the abject failure to come up with a creative solution to house and business premises costs is unforgivable. Clearly a strategy that takes profits away from speculators, landlords and developers is required. Clearly the pro-developer, trickle-down philosophy has failed and clearly now is the time for something ambitious and decisive.

I’m saying all this as a centrist, who genuinely believes FG ran out of steam a few years’ ago. They can claim a decent recovery from 09 and they can claim the abortion and gay marriage referendums. Since then.. very little.

  4. I don’t think FF have anyone of Pascal’s calibre, but I also don’t like this line of argument. Nobody is indispensible in politics and that’s how it should be-otherwise we wouldn’t have elections.

It reminds me of the handwringing over Seamus Woulf and Phil Hogan-somehow, we all survived their resignation. Sometimes I wonder whether the likes of Sheehan would prefer a technocratic dictatorship, not a democracy

  5. Paschal refuses to drop the CGT rate and tax on ETFs despite the board of accountants last year saying the latter was insanity. He also refused to address the cost of living crisis way back in May.

  6. >Talking to a group of diplomats from EU countries recently about our reshuffle, there was genuine astonishment that Ireland would give up such a prominent role in Europe.

This seems super sus to me. Like our European partners are going to think we don’t respect them if Pascal doesn’t get to apply for a second term? It’s democratic politics and every country in Europe has the same parochial horse trading – many of them have coalition governments too. I highly doubt that a group of diplomats would be “astonished” by this.
