Could cash payments be about to make a comeback in Norway?

  1. I don’t support more cash use, but it would be a mistake to get rid of it completely. We don’t know the future, and things can happen which will make it difficult to pay with cashless options. War, natural catastrophes etc.

  2. The internet is a miracle, and it’s dangerous and vulnerable to not appreciate how insane it is that online banking and digital payment actually works. To put over-reliance on digital systems is to forget how fragile the privilege of having these systems actually is. Having a backup in the form of cash is a good thing.

  3. No, it’s just an attempt to make sure cash is still accepted for the minority of people who still prefer using it (or as backup in case of payment system outages). Despite the law saying cash must be accepted as a general rule more and more businesses are making it practically impossible to do so (require exact change, charging an extra fee for cash handling or just having no point of sale capable of accepting cash at all), and the current law has basically no teeth to compel a company to comply. In the vast majority of cases it’s way to much hassle for people to go though all the hoops to even file a formal complaint to even start any kind of process.

  4. Why are there people against cash payments? The option is good to have and you’re not forced to use it, so what’s the deal people

  5. Betteridge’s Law of Headlines strikes again…

The article doesn’t even attempt to suggest why cash would make a comeback and become “king” again just because the government wants to solidify the customer’s right to use cash. This is a measure to make sure cash is accepted, and it’s mostly to prepare for emergencies.

Cash will obviously continue to merely be a cumbersome option for the few who want to use it, but now they’ll actually be able to complain when they’re refused service. There’s nothing in this proposal that will make cash easier to use than electronic payment options, so they’ll continue to reign supreme.

  6. I have a mother of the prime age of 72 who is scared of anything digital. She can use her online bank, check emails (but not open attachments…) and she can use Facebook on her phone. The government is making sure that she and her fellow non digitals can have a little less stress in their life and still use cash and non digital solutions in banking.

  7. It needs to be an option. Having literally *everything* in society totally dependent on 1s and 0s is just asking for trouble one day.

  8. I don’t think cash will come back in Norway in any big way. Norway is incredible far ahead of the curve when it comes to the prevalence of card payments.

One of the things that sets Norway apart when it comes to card payment is the speed payments are cleared. It’s almost instantaneous and its just about everywhere.

Cash is an inconvenience as its slower, increase the everyday risk for stores and it cost more handle. The ONLY benefit is high resilience in a extreme crises where the telecommunications systems are greatly endangered. But even UA manages to keep a working internet in most part of the country. So I don’t fully buy the national security implications.

  9. I think cash is important – without cash you have no way of transacting money directly with someone without a middle-man. This is fine in normal times, but could prove devastating otherwise. Imagine a dictator came into power in some country and ordered the banks to cut off access to banking services for his political enemies, or some sort of minority group. Or imagine a natural catastrophe where power goes out in the country for months. Or even just if the current power crises continues and we are forced to have regular blackouts. In these cases people would still have the possibility of buying essential items if cash is still around.

These are the more extreme examples, but I think it’s also just important in general be able to have self-custody over your finances should you want to.

  10. Cash is king until the day pc is actually reliable. As for now i have way more problems with it than it’s worth.

  11. What a stupid headline. No, of course cash is not going to make a come back. They just want to make sure it doesnt die away. Its needed as a backup. But we wont start using it more unless nothing else works.
