So…When we get this lot out, is there any way we can make being an arsehole illegal?
Another one that belongs in prison and not in Downing Street.
I’m not sticking up for this asshole at all but is this not so they can freeze the cap and the levy is to be paid back once the cap is frozen? So a 6k energy bill or a levy in the future?
Wow, that’s an impressive way to put “government spending must be paid by future generations”. Can we use this for other things too?
The article doesn’t seem to make it clear, but based on the general gist of it it sounds like it’s talking about the Energy Tariff Fund- it would lock our bills at about 2k and the government would borrow to pay the rest, or something to that accord.
One of the better immediate quick fix solutions but it still has plenty of problems… as is obvious.
This country is becoming a very hostile place in which to live.
Yep, this will be the solution.
No extreme price rises now, but a long term grinding levy.
Another boomer bailout.
Imagine if we didn’t sell everything off. Some things come to bite you in the arse.
The only solution would be for the entire country not to pay them and I mean the entire country. Don’t pay until the prices drop back down to under £2000 a year (which is a lot). Issue is people will stay pay them because they don’t want to be cut off.
Once it comes to winter I’m stopping my DD and just paying for what I use.
A levy, more drilling for oil and more profit for energy companies. A reduction on renewables, nimby priorities, no solar of note and no turbines near curtain twitchers.
….. Next week, itll be buying russian oil and gas in a small and precise manner.
Heaven forbid that energy companies fail to make a profit when there are pkebs to foot the bill…. Or die trying.
> The energy giants want him to bung them a huge loan to bring down bills and dodge a windfall tax which customers would be asked to repay over the next 20 years
I don’t recall reading anywhere that we should repay the already watered down windfall tax idea. If this is the case, then we’re screwed in every way possible and twice on Sundays.
Every MP claims expenses for energy and every other cost of living item.. HTF can they BEGIN to understand the crushing burdens that their inability to control the the excessive profits that monopolies are laying on us.. there is a revolution in the air now.. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !!!
This is perfectly predictable. Selling off the energy sector profited the government of the time in the short term. Spreading the resulting debt across a generation is creating a problem for future governments whilst aiding the current one.
I don’t know what the solution is, but this does not seem fair at all.
When are we marching on their residences? Their homes?! When will enough be enough?
Keep adding more! Why not just make it 10K? heck, maybe make it 20K per year!
Yeah let’s not deal with the problem but make it a nice legacy for the next generation to clear up. Tax the bloody providers and use that money to subsidise the firms prices.
Did Liz Truss have sex with Kwasi Kwarteng?
I am not saying you should imagine that, but I believe she did
It may buy time until we can build more nuclear power plants.
Tories do love their flat taxes. £320 extra a year for a wealthy family is nothing. £320 extra a year for a single person on the poverty line is condemning them to eat or heat for the next 20 years. Equally upsetting is the person on the poverty line will probably use way less energy during the energy crisis, so they will be paying back proportionally more of their income for less benefit than the wealthy family have.
And this is how we know they don’t have any ideas on how to solve this crisis.
I wouldn’t describe Kwasi Kwarteng as a top anything, top prat maybe
Can someone explain to me, I’m trying to be well-read on this topic, why aren’t the government saying to the firms (that are making record profits) “no” ?
Make the oil and gas producing companies pay. They have the massive profits, they could afford to pay more tax….
Obviously won’t happen with this government in power.
Clearly the citizens of this country are just a loathsome hurdle that must be jumped at election times, so they can get back to the important business of making themselves and their friends money
These people are greasy little skid marks on the underpants of our society, it’s time someone got the scrubbing brush out.
These politicians are proper idiots and lack forward thinking- if prices continue to soar what will plan B be next year, another 20 year “loan” at £320? Absolutely bonkers
There is no easy fix.
Putting my boring hat on ( and sorry to disappoint those crying for nationalisation) British Gas are currently making £6 profit per household after tax!
This problem is pretty much squarely down to the sanctions on Russia. No one could have predicted this crisis and we are all going to have to pay for it.
The Tory quick fix plan in detail “make it the futures problem”. They are all quite literally addicted to money. They will sell anything they can for short term gain, expect someone else to pay for them.
Easy win for any party promising to remove the levy once prices have dropped again
HE ORCHESTRATED THIS
Standard shortterm thinking by this government. They’ve never done anything else
Can someone please create a petition to make it illegal for someone to lie about their election promises
send your energy company a letter fullnof dog shit. they deserve it
Standard Tory Behaviour.
Screw over the future electorate to save their own arses.
Just don’t pay 4head
Just nationalise the whole energy sector. It shouldn’t be making profit for shareholders. Privatisation was meant to introduce competition so costs would be reduced through efficiency savings. That hasn’t happened in any sector that’s been privatised.
The next generations currency is going to be the tiny bit of fresh water left so why would they care?
yeah that’ll teach us plebs not to waste money on frivolous things like food
Government enforced debt servitude.
So insanely sick of hearing “families” from politicians and media, considering households of couples with dependent children only make up around half, or possibly fewer, households in the UK. Feels like no-one cares about childless or single adults, who are actually a majority taken together
Market reforms needed as soon as possible, but in the short term the country cannot be allowed to descend any further into the abyss. Something like this needs to be done, hopefully the EU can instigate some sort of reforms in the market – if only brexit hadn’t shafted us even further….
So every family will received an itemized reminder, printed every month, of Tory energy policy failure, for the next TWENTY YEARS?
