Greece’s population decreased by 3.5% compared to a decade ago and stands at 10,432,481 people, [according to the first results of the 2021 census](https://www.kathimerini.gr/society/561963697/apografi-apotelesmata-10-432-481-atoma-o-plithysmos-tis-elladas/). More than half the country lives in the regions of Attica (Capital: Athens) and Central Macedonia (Capital: Thessaloniki), which have a population of 3.8 and 1.8 million respectively. Only one of Greece’s 13 regions (South Aegean) posted a population increase in 2021 vs 2011.
The census was marred by [violence against census workers](https://greekreporter.com/2021/11/25/hostility-census-workers-greece-mass-resignations/), with many citizens refusing to participate. In Patras (Greece’s third largest city), 500 out of 700 census workers quit due to the hostility they faced while trying to carry out their work. This has led many to believe the official population figures might actually be underreported.
What is the reason? Aging population, immigration or both?
greece is like japan but without anything that makes japan great
