CERNOBBIO, Italy, Sept 3 (Reuters) – France should focus on tackling the near term energy challenge posed by the approaching winter season, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Saturday when asked about a possible new gas pipeline via the Pyrenees.
“The short term challenge is to have more gas, more oil more electricity coming from other countries than Russia,” he told reporters at a press conference at the Ambrosetti business forum in northern Italy.
“This is a question of months, weeks, days, I’m not sure that a new pipeline could help us to go through the winter,” he added.
“Let’s focus on the very short term challenges,” he said, adding public opinion could question an investment in fossil fuel infrastructure because it expected instead an acceleration in the green energy transition.
“Electricity and hydrogen seem to me to be more promising than a new gas pipeline.”
Spain’s energy minister this week criticised France’s reluctance to support a project to build a third gas connection between the two countries to reduce Europe’s reliance on Russian gas.
Damn, does the competence of French ministers has declined so much that they can’t even think anymore about doing two projects in parallel?
We clearly today see it is important for EU to be interconnected so that if issues in one place arise they can be covered from another direction. Maybe it isn’t a short-term solution but long-term it should be a priority.
got to protect EDF
Nobody would accept it anyway, consider our opinions first before anyone …
We have manifested for way less than this, some french may not like nuclear but for sure everyone hate gas.
The pipeline will have to cross the whole country while angering the environmental associations and citizens with little to no benefit for France for a country to support countries running on coal and gas while decrying the nuclear. All of this after we already criticized the nordstream project years ago. While our own country faces a crisis because it didn’t invest enough in nuclear this 25 last years because of the pressure from parties and NGO sponsored by gas industry.
Sure, let’s do this.
Build the damn pipe to Italy!
France the most pro-European country 🙂
They are only protecting their nuclear business instead to help Central European countries
