Notting Hill Carnival marred by serious stabbings and violent incidents, say police

  1. Shame it ended this way, I was hearing it was a good vibe at the beginning. Maybe it’s just me, but does it feel like it’s becoming more and more difficult to go to any large event these days without stuff like this happening?

  2. Well, it is a diversity festival. Stabbings in UK became daily occurence so it’s only logical that they would happen there too /s

  3. WHAT?!?!

I would never have believed in a million years that there could ever be any trouble like that happening at the Notting Hill Carnival, of all places! I am shocked! Shocked!

…Well OK, maybe not that shocked. In fact, shocked isn’t even the right word for it. More.. nonchalant, maybe? Indifferent? I don’t know.

It happens every time at Carnival.

  4. Marred?

It’s tragic someone was killed and horrific that there were stabbings, but 210 arrests per million is not too bad relatively speaking. They usually do another report afterwards though, where figures will be much higher I guess.

    Shabby headline though

  5. 209 arrests, over a million attendants

i cannot think of any other event in this country that gets reported this way it pisses me off.

  6. I went to the Carnival on both days. I took my 5 year old son on Sunday. At no point did I see any trouble. The atmosphere was overwhelming friendly to the point that I received a hug after apologising for bumping into someone. He said he didn’t mind and he was just so happy that carnival was back. My son absolutely loved it. We couldn’t go more than 5 steps without someone high 5’ing or first bumping him.

It’s very sad that a young person was killed but that unfortunate incident is no representation of the event as a whole.

  7. Reading about other major events recently with large crowds , such as Leeds and Reading music festivals. It all starts off happy and jovial but descends into chaos as time goes on caused by alcohol, drug abuse and just general idiocy. It’s the British summer innit?.

  8. Does this Carnival ever have no violence? I can’t remember a time when there’s been no one stabbed, shot or beaten up.
It’s meant to be a joyess occasion, not let’s go out and stab someone.

  9. Always the same thing every year, stabbings at Notting hill carnival and overdose death at Leeds festival. That’s all I every hear of.

  10. This is why the locals board up their houses and gardens and leave while the festival is on. Experience.

  11. Ha I go to carnival almost every year I can, and it’s good but when people act like it’s some loving family fun day I always laugh. It’s cool, but after like 7pm probably better just goin home

  12. I went on the Sunday and my friends were all saying “that’s the family day” & “Monday is way more lit”.. think I’ll just be going on the Sunday from now on

  13. When are they going to cancel this event? Imagine having to board up your house once a year? This is essentially _The Purge_. Awful.

  14. It’s so eye-opening to see the difference between this comment section and the one on Reading festival.

This one has commenters talking about ‘feral’ people and how the festival should be cancelled – whilst the Reading Festival commenters talk about torching tents being a tradition, a yearly ritual, talking about media exaggeration

You don’t have to think too hard as to why there’s a discrepancy 🤔

  15. Went there yesterday. Loved it. We all know why this festival in particular gets more negative press in general.

  16. Love the biased reporting, shame there was any violence, but less than 0.1%.. make news *stories* include facts!
