“but we say poepen”

  1. Easily resolved: just limit the use of the term Flemish and Flanders to the actual, [historical](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graafschap_Vlaanderen#/media/Bestand:Quad_Flandria.jpg) and [linguistic](https://www.variatielinguistiek.ugent.be/node/43) region of Flanders (you know, that thing we have an East and West province of), because actual Flemish is [(still)](https://scriptsource.org/cms/scripts/page.php?item_id=language_detail_ref&key=vls) spoken there. This whole Flemish/Dutch/Brabantian/dialect/language confusion is the result of the Flemish movement trying to awkwardly fit everything together for a political agenda.

  2. * dutch, or antwaarps, or south antwerpian, or brabantian.

I would never say flemish, god forbid i get lumped together with east or west flanders, or Limburg, or vlaams brabant, or …

  3. I honestly wouldn’t mind a new standard language based on the dialects in Flanders. At least that would sound natural to speak and write. Having to say things like “jij” is just awful. Or at least add more words used in Flanders to Standard Dutch.

  4. And that’s why I always get confused as a Walloon who learnt Dutch but can’t understand sh*t when she goes to Flanders…

  5. personally I use flemish as a way to distinguish belgian standard dutch from dutch standard dutch just like the swiss and austrians use swiss and austrian to distinguish their german from the standard german german
