Lovecraft has a story in which the protagonist devolves into a primordial beast and the lowest stage is shown by the man losing the ability to speak English and instead reverting to speaking irish.
Let me guess, a bunch of ethnic british people just created a bunch caricature Irish characters.
Can they just like, leave us alone for one century.
The decision to use the accents was daft *but* I don’t think they are really portraying the harfoots as simpletons or the elves as particularly superior to them.
The elves for the most part come across as arrogant self-righteous pricks, whereas the harfoots seem to be intelligent enough to stay out of it all and live happily and harmoniously with the land.
Guess it depends on how you look at it. Still a daft decision to use accents but out of the three that have them (British stuck-up elitist Elves, Scottish grumpy fat cave-dwelling Dwarves, and the Irish simple-folk Harfoots), so far I’d much prefer to be or be hanging out with the Harfoots, tbh.
Been on the LOTR subreddit today, and it’s amazing how many people, I’m guessing most of them are British, don’t see how the portrayal might be problematic.
I don’t particularly care apart from now bad the accents are, but I find it laughable how amazon have marketed this as the most diverse thing ever then pushed a negative Irish stereotype 😂
Can you imagine if they had gotten a load of Irish lads onto the set to do traditionally “Asian” accents while squinting their eyes? In fairness, I think this is where the identity politics crowd go awry. So concerned with image, they end up being the very thing they don’t want to associate with
Nah.
I’m waiting for it all to come out before I get prime for a month. Are the Harfeet basically just hobbits or have they made this Irish accent variant a bit dumber than hobbits? Apart from the accents where are the negative stereotypes?
Linguistic blackface .
You guys have a higher GDP per capita than the U.S. or the U.K.
Approximately no one seriously believes that Irish people are subhuman or inferior in any way, and the last time anyone did was before most of us were even born
Okay, the hobbits have Irish accents. They also kinda-sorta-almost correspond to an anti-Irish stereotype from 1890 (but not really, they’re clearly based on positive stereotypes of hunter-gatherer societies, which Ireland in the 1800s was nothing like; there’s a whole
speech about being one with nature that sounds like it came out of *Pocahontas*). So what? You’re all just looking for something to be offended about. Suck it up and watch something else if you don’t like the accent.
the design on the right looks a bit like Robert Emmet (a protestant)
Just came from r/Scotland where they’re repeatedly moaning about the accents of Dwarves in a make-beleive fantasy show. Oh wait no, only the pearl clutches here.
The way i saw it
The elves are welsh, the dwarves are scottish, the harfoots (hobbits) are the irish and the racist and bigotted humans are english… going as far as saying that the humans actually sided with the main evil and the elves had to station themselves beside them so to keep an eye on them…
They’re hardly doing anyone justice, bar maybe the very welsh named elves at this point. And the dwarves being portrayed as hard working but roughhousing and steriotypical blue collar scots
