Of course not, it was just a rage point in the leadership fight.
What’s that, another completely unworkable dead cat is not being taken forward?
Deja vu. They were rattling on about this a few years ago.
I imaging they’re going to go with the “motorbikes banned from London” lie again soon then?
It was the most dumb idea I ever heard uttered by this government. Clearly it was just so Grant Shapps could get his name in the Daily Mail to help angle for a place in the next cabinet and to provoke a bit of culture war that this government breeds off.
I’m sure they’ll think of another way to get you to pay for your free transport.
It’s almost as if it was part of a culture war which was never workable in the first place. It got a load of Jeremy Clarkson fans all riled up though, so it did it’s job really.
What a surprise. This kind of statement rears its ugly head every 10 years or so & all it does is wind people up & make groups of ‘them & us’ with lots of aggressiveness on the roads directed to one of the most vulnerable groups of road users.
Obviously not, it was never going to happen. The damage caused by riling up more anti-cycle hate is done though.
Schapps is an absolutely idiot, he should be sacked on principle.
Every time a story about cyling/cyclist restrictions like this comes out, the amount of close passes and aggressive driving I get while im on the bike goes way up.
Last week I had two seperate cars actually slow down next to me, while I was in the cycle lane, to give me shit about cycling.
I’ve ended up ordering a gopro just as a form of evidence/protection incase they cause an accident.
the police cant keep up with uninsured drivers so how are they going to managed against cyclists ?
The trouble is the inciting of hate will get cyclists killed as daily Mail/ grant shapps wind up drivers to punish cyclists for not paying road tax/ not being insured/ being remainer free huggers.
Yet another nonsense story to distract the public, fill the newspapers and airwaves with pointless bile.

Yet another successful piece of distraction by her majesty’s government…
Huh, almost as if this was blindly obvious to most people.
Skateboarders should have to take a test, lights on skateboards indicators as well and a seatbelt.
Ah shit, I’ve already started prepping my 6 year old for her test!
It’s really weird all the hate that’s been whipped up towards cycling. When you see how fat and unhealthy our population is you’d think it would be seen as a good thing.
Anyone who thought this was going to happen needs their head examined. Anyone who suggested this in the first place is too far gone to save.
Of course it’s a bloody stupid idea.
It never was going to happen. It was always just another DM Tory dead cat.
It’s almost, *almost*, like the inimitable fuckwits at the Department of Transport were taking a lot of truly righteous shit that they couldn’t handle from the strike action and pulled out a red herring as distraction technique to appeal to and rile up their base and stop them from realising that they are a bunch of unfathomably unqualified and inept, opportunist sacks of radioactive lard. Maybe idk.
We already have number plates on cars and people still drive like idiots, so I don’t see how putting number plates on cycles would be any different.
An actual dead cat story serving its purpose twice-
Throw it out there, sit back and watch the outrage and arguments ignore the current UK crisis!
Say its not going to happen after all- sit back and watch the outrage and arguments ignore the current crisis!
I, for one, would have loved to see the comedy of it. It was and is a superbly absurd, surreally idiotic, practically and theoretically nonsensical idea. Not to mention what it claimed to solve, which in itself is an exercise in the reversal of causality chain, all known statistics etc. etc.
If one thinks for 5 seconds about its practicaly implications, one has to get to A&E with abdominal hernia caused by dangerous levels of laughter.
But… as a propaganda trick and a rubber bone to chew on, it was brilliantly executed.
Almost as if Grant Shapps is absolutely fucking shit at his job.
It likely never was a plan, just one of many ideas thrown around.
It would be funny if it became law. Because the only other country with licence plates on bikes is North Korea…
I really don’t understand the UK’s hatred towards cyclists.
It’s almost as if this government create outrage from dead cats to distract from other goings on.

It was all smokescreen, anyone could see it from miles away
They’ll try to direct anything away from the fact no one can pay their bills and we’re being robbed blind by corporations.
We lived in Switzerland briefly and they have sort of similar rules for cyclists and my dad who is a cyclist absolutely loved it and he thought it was a good idea that we should absolutely have in this country. However, he said that our government (regardless of party) would just fuck it up and not implement it correctly so there would be no point.
Ah cool so bike gate has gone again, now they can get back to bashing trans people.
The intention was never to pay for the set up of a huge and expensive registration system for bikes. The intention was to fuel hatred towards people who have decided to use a particular form of transport to distract from all the other Tory blunders.
As a person who cycles I can assure you it’s worked and I’ve seen a huge increase in the number of aggressive actions from the worst drivers on the road, from some who’ve decided to try and spook me with a dangerously close pass, to some whove thrown things at me, to some whove literally swerved to try and clip me as I overtake them in traffic.
I’ve cycled for the past decade in London and seen the city and its driver get generally better and better for safety towards people on bikes, that trend has recently and sharply changed.
The culture war is a war the British government is perpetrating on Britain’s citizens, and it will have real British casualties.
Just like the 20 other times it has been reviewed by HMG and declined every single time. It isn’t economic, adds no safety value and deters people from cycling, which is a net cost to the NHS in poorer health outcomes. Yet we will be here again in 3 months time with the same people saying the same things on radio talk shows, because it is cheap and easy to stir up drivers for the 15 seconds they are inconvenienced by a cyclist.
It’s simple programming.
It’s not the first time this idea has been suggested. This idea was brought up years ago. This idea will be brought up again.
They float an idea.
*obvious public outrage*
6months, 12 months, 10 years later…
They float the idea a 2nd time, a 3rd time however many it takes
You have now had time to process and simulate different scenarios in relation to this new ‘idea’
You are now desensitised
You accept
(Once the public consensus has been tilted into their favour and enough people agree with the message, usually because they have been manipulated under fake safety nets, this community will now do their bidding for them and the fanciful term ‘peer pressure’ aka decades worth of programming will make the rest conform)
