People of the UK, please remain with your heads firmly in the sand. I repeat once again, that there is nothing to see here and certainly nothing that can be done about it.
Look at Newcastle-under-lyme and the Walleys Quarry/Red industries thing, the EA have been letting them off the hook for years even though they know for a fact they’re dumping illegally, their dumping is infecting local rivers, you can smell what they’re dumping from 5/6 miles away, its causing asthma problems, giving people banging headaches etc.
They put in meters to measure air toxicity, which magically stop working when they’re in, they send police to break up protests, but wont send people to check the vans etc.

Waste in the UK is literally run like a mafia.
River pollution is horrible. It can lead to huge environmental disasters! Just think how little fresh water we have in the world and how that’s been going down regularly through the years. And how in most countries big companies have bought the rights to “mine” the springs and bottle the water and sell it at any price they want, even though that should be our water.
Sackings. From the top ,down. If they can’t do the job, get someone who can
Doesn’t surprise me. Recently residents of an area in stoke on Trent were complaining about a foul smell, turned out it was noxious gases being released from the privately owned landfill near by, residents found out they were breaking many rules and protested but the environment agency was on the side of the landfill over residents the whole time. Environment agency is infected with people who used to or also work for industries that destroy our environment, bending rules in their favour.
Monbiot’s been reporting on this for the last decade. It started with dairies killing rivers by sending cow shit into tributaries in massive quantities. He reported it but was told the EA aren’t enforcing it anymore.
The EA has been defunded and it was Truss that was in charge when it happened. This is also one of the so called “brexit benefits”, and bonfire of regulations.
Sounds like an agency run by workshy complicit wankers. Name and shame them
Title is a bit misleading. The article says all the reports are logged and categorised but thanks to government funding cuts, the agency can now only send people to look at the most severe incidents whereas they used to have the money and staff to go to them all.
The corporate puppets that are the government won’t do anything as it will dent the profits of their masters.
“Once a river is damaged, it becomes harder to have a major incident on it. “You can only kill so many fish. Once you’ve already killed them, the chances of getting a significant incident are much reduced,”
““If you phone up and report a category 3 and someone in the call centre says we’re not going to attend this, you’re not going to keep calling up because you feel like you’re wasting your time. So we are getting less and less evidence on what’s happening in rivers,” said Nightingale. An example of a category 3 could be a “2km spill of oil or sewage in a river”.
Tell them a farmer did it and watch them change their tune.
Water company pollutes=hey, OK, no problem friend
Farmer pollutes=WE NEED TO STOP ALL FARMING AND ALL SUBSIDIES AND PLANT TREES OVER EVERYTHING THAT PRODUCES FOOD IMMEDIATELY AND FINE THEM, MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF THEM AND TAKE THEM TO COURT!!!!
Honestly, I have a hard time remembering any farmer that’s dumped so much slurry into a body of water that France can smell it.

The guardians earlier article was also an enlightening read: https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/22/liz-truss-environment-agency-cuts-sewage-water-pollution
