New scheme will allow landowners to plant one hectare of trees without forestry licence

  1. Really bad idea at a time when much of the world is starving to be converting farmland to forestry. Drive through rural Sweden and look at the thousands and thousands of acres of pine forest. Makes sense. Sowing down Cork farmland to trees is fucking madness

  2. Don’t answer the door! It might be the tree license inspector. He’ll want to come in and make sure you don’t have any trees in the house.

  3. Urban sprawl is a wayyyyy bigger problem than fostery.

If you are worried about land usage and land efficiency, ban low density housing in urban areas and build upwards.

  4. For a second I thought this said “landlords” and I was thinking they’re always getting more rights than tenants.

  5. You need afforestation licences to plant trees in Ireland. If you consider how trees were planted back in the 1980s, 90s etc on deep peat or in other protected areas then this is what licences should supposedly tackle. It also matters more in regard to payments.

As somebody in the industry, and as the article alludes to we are waiting for the department of ag strategy on forestry. This project is a neat idea, but the bigger issues will not be addressed by 1 ha plantings. So far Minister Hackett has been somewhat burying her head in the sand on the scale of the issued faced. The DAFM senior civil servants have also been, almost catastrophically so, unable to address the problems they have created or that have been developing for decades. They still get their 6% raises though.

  6. great so we’re going to have mini forests dotted around the place and then in 30 years they’ll all be cut down for a bit of cash.

  7. Whut? ?? You needed a license to plant a fucking tree on your own land??
Some country lol. What an utter joke of a fucking place this island is
