Seriously, when is the government going to step in?

  1. The government has to do something otherwise there will be a lot of deaths this year (directly due to cold/illness and also suicide).

They CAN do something. Other countries have promised cash relief/credit on bills, capping the prices by funding the companies, etc. It’s a waste of their money but they don’t have a choice if they want a functioning society.

  2. FF and FG are finally going to lose the old people votes for next election. Partly due to them killing them off by not helping to compensate for the energy problem.

  3. You’ll be waiting a while.

Similar to the petrol price hikes, they’ll only intervene at the last minute once the outrage has properly built up. That way, people don’t notice they’re getting shafted as much.

Look at petrol and diesel prices now. Compare that to when everyone was up in arms a few months back. They’re nearly at the same level again and not a word about it.

People are weak. They’ll put up with the rising energy prices and go without in the same way they put up with the extortionate fuel prices and everything else.

  4. this really has the potential to crash the economy. business wont be able to sustain these increases, never mind us poor lads who have been sentenced to freeze to death.

the free market will bring value to the consumer….it will….yeah.

  5. What happens if I don’t pay my electricity bills for the winter? Will they just pile up to be paid at a later date or will I be cut off?

I don’t know how to pay them with not enough income to cover all my other household expenses.

  6. I really hope anyone who raised objections to wind farms and other renewable energy sources feel this pinch, they are part of problem, leaving us wide open when the market goes tits up.

  7. I’ve never been so fearful to get an energy bill. I actually don’t know how I’m going to pay it if it’s sky high, it’ll be that or food for the month

  8. What can they do? Prices ARE soaring world wide. Subsidies are paid for by the taxpayer, not some magic fund

  9. Electric Ireland is state-owned. EILI5, why can’t they just _not_ raise prices? They shouldn’t be under duress of needing to stay profitable if they’re a state run utility provider

  10. They will never drop the price back down, even when this war is over we will be paying massive electrcity bills, greedy cunts. Remember fokes who is in office when this happened come next election

  11. Electric ireland needs to maintain their 680 million euro profit this year. Us plebs will need to suffer and pay so they can reach that target 🤩

  12. ITT: People who have no idea how energy markets work.

Downvote all you want, here’s the truth.

A lot of energy providers are going to go bust or exit the Irish market in the next 6 months. Only ones who have the means to generate their own electricity will survive.

This isn’t some cartel hiking up prices, this is companies trying to stay afloat, trying to keep people in jobs. Europe is facing down the barrel of it’s next major recession.

The government will have to introduce massive subsidies in the budget.
