I’m sure they mean well but who knows the full story?
I don’t anyway.
Good on them (as long as it’s not some poor old lady’s house who’s in hospital and is gonna come back to a heap of lads eating her biscuits and admiring her doilies).
This is one of those things that starts off with good intentions and will probably end badly.. are they going to just turf people in with no support? reconnect electricity? Help maintain the places etc?
Steal empty houses
Take back? Was it ever theirs to begin with?
Good on ye lads. The housing crisis needs fixing and if the government won’t do it we all have to do it. We can’t wait around while the crisis is at new depths every week.
Real whiff of boot leather off some of these comments
I understand why they are doing it, I just think it’s very unfortunate that it’s come to this.
Looking forward to the vacant property tax, hope it causes these “landlords” to pay out the nose. Also should not be exempt from LPT if house is derelict. Force them to sell. Someone will make use of it.
Stormy this weekend?
Stealing and squatting ? 1980s style – not going to end well
As usual, nothing but criticism from /r/Ireland. What the fuck are you doing?
Oh right, just complaining.
At least someone is trying to do something. If this only highlights the problem and shames this govt into actual action then some good will have been done. People talking about breaking and entry and homeless people suing owners have no clue what they are talking about. We need grass roots action in this country … we need to show this right wing landed administration that enough is enough. If we had water charges now you can bet they would be getting hiked up now too as result of inflation etc. I hope interest rates on mortgages don t go up because if they do many of the people making negative comments in thus sub might be looking to organisations like this for help… we need a new Daniel O Connell , we need mass civil disobedience and we need homes for all.
Look at all these do-gooders on their high horses. These lads are doing a good thing for people who have absolutely nothing. Good on them
There’s a house in the town I live, it’s been vacant for the last 17 years at least, on the outside it seems to be in great shape, the plot is obviously overgrown…
How would you find out who owns it?
This place is fucking weird. Every other post is about the housing/energy crisis and nearly all r/Ireland are ready to lynch the government, riot, etc.. Now a post of people actually doing something and r/Ireland now want to lynch them instead.
Can’t believe people are opposed to housing homeless people in empty homes
Some of these comments jesus fuckign christ, it’s easy knowing none of you have had to deal with many hardships in your life. Absolute muppets, sad that houses are being taken over for free and they’re not making a penny out of it. Some of the people in this country really have fucking lost the run of themselves.
Absolutely disgusting that there’s people in here saying they’d be better off in tents. Talk about burrying your head in the sand.
Better than sleeping in a tent next to the canal and getting crippled by a JCB driver who didnt check to see if anyone was sleeping in it.
A lot of apologists for land hoarding in this thread.
I for one support this kind of thing
Fair play to them. It’s not a solution to the crisis as a whole but it will make a difference to those who get the house and if enough people engage in this type of action it might force the authorities into action (although that action will likely be to arrest these people and replace the door with bigger locks)
It’s interesting how often the subreddit moans about houses not being used and how someone ought to stand up against it. But when someone does so to help out homeless people, they moan about it.
Fucking depressing to think that this is what has to be done to help the homeless on our streets.
Don’t care. If theres dangerous weather ahead, and theres buildings not being used/condemned, let the homeless take shelter in them. There should already be shelters in DCC.
its about time – a very basic human right is somewhere to live and if the sham government cant give us that without it being their private properties at extortion rates then you we need to take it back by force.
/r Ireland: We need more houses!!
/r Ireland: Not like that!!
Yeah, this is bad, but what do you expect to happen? People are offered no alternative. I don’t like it, but stuff like this is probably unsurprising in a housing crisis, especially when it seems like nothing is being done about it
They need to introduce a juicy tax for idle properties.
Their people out their who would love to own a home.
