Poland. Army spending is expected to rise to 98 billion zloty from 58 billion zloty this year, next year to as much as 138 billion zloty ($29 billion)

  1. Didn’t have the impression that Poland can afford such expenses. And I’ve seen comments from several Poles complaining about what this means for social services.

    Of course, the government will justify this with the risk of Russian aggression. But that’s just an excuse IMO. Refugees, Western non-traditional morals and now Russia are the gifts that keep on giving for the PiS government.

  2. A lot of this is just a long overdue completion of the modernisation process for the armed force as well a replenishment of stock that was given away.

    Nevertheless, once completed though, it will serve as an effective deterrent and certainly be a significant land force in particular.

    In a perfect world Poland wouldn’t have to buy this stuff, but given current events and history, well, best to be prudent.

    They’re also investing in local manufacturing with a lot of stuff (K2’s etc), so that’s a plus as well. Technology transfer occurs, local jobs are created etc etc.
