what’s with the lack of bike – Lahti

  1. You can easily carry the pedals in your pocket and just screw them on when you want to go.

Wouldn’t want anyone stealing them, would we?

  2. Always leave bicycle on area that has plenty of people. Lock bicycle from the frame to a pole or bike stand with sturdy U-lock. If bicycle is expensive don’t Park it / leave it for long time on city, even if it’s locked to pole or bicycle stand. Better to carry bicycle to apartment, keep it on balcony or apartment hallway.

Also apartment buildings bicycle cellars are not good places to store expensive bikes, thief’s can stole the bicycle from there and they have time broke all the locks.

Maybe use two bicycle tactic: expensive bicycle for training purpose to Ride long distance for exersice purpose. Keep this bicycle inside apartment.

Cheap old bicycle to Ride into city, going shops and so on. Keep this locked with U-lock from frame to pole but if it’s stolen monetary value is not high meaning 50 euros or similar.

  3. I know this is basically like victim blaming, but how can a person with a “real” bike not know not to lock it like it was some old grandma’s bike? Although, I have to admit, a part of the blame goes to those old fashioned bike stands that encourage old fashioned locking methods.

  4. I just bought an e-bike and I am too scared to leave it anywhere. Why does Finland have such a problem with bike theft?

  5. Those type of bike racks are utterly pointless. I hate them.

You can’t secure your bike to them, only a wheel. Hence the above.

That and they aren’t secured down at all, so someone could turn up to one full of bikes with a van, and with the help of a friend steal a whole rack of bikes in seconds.

A bunch of [Sheffield Stands](https://cycle-works.com/products/sheffield-stand/) just got installed near me. These are much better types of bike stand. HOWEVER, like in the image, they didn’t embed the rails between them into the ground, in fact they are all individual, bolted to the ground stands. So no matter how well you lock your bike, someone with a spanner can just come along, loosen the bolts, and steal your bike.

Finland doesn’t seem to know how to deal with rising bike thefts yet.

  6. Ha, that wheel has been there for at least one or two years now.

Obviously the lock itself must be pretty good.

  7. “Single black and white front wheel in search of bicycle. i enjoy long rides along the shore, and easy rides on wide bike rains. totally not interested in a bike that likes to “off road it” or go up steep hills.

i’m in good shape, with no holes… looking forward to meeting my soul mate 🙂 ”

(if i was in Lahti, i’d be tempted to write that up and attach to the bike 🙂 )

  8. Some bikes has quick-release front wheel, which is the most idiotic feature of some fancier bikes. Here I think someone just locked the front wheel and someone just released it and took rest of the bike.

  9. As an immigrant, this is the one thing that I absolutely hate about Finland. Bicycle thievery is rampant in here and the worst part is that even the police won’t help you in such cases… I know they have more urgent things to take care of, but putting the hands in the air and pretending the issue doesn’t exist is not the right way to go about this problem.
