What’s with the lack of bicycle seats? – Tampere

  1. I just noticed a number of bikes without seats – is this a Finnish thing to ride without a seat, or are seats stolen for some reason?

  2. Someone stole a good saddle off an abandoned bike. You can see the back tyre is deflated and the rim rests on the pavement.

  3. Ah thanks for the comments, I was most confused by the third bike along that has no seat but still has the seat pole ( a bit hard to see in the photo )

  4. If you attach your bike to anything on the street in Barcelona, it takes less than 5 minutes, and the thieves are not from Spain, but mostly from [eastern countries](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTZty9m1BMo). The freedom of the European Union without borders is a double-edged weapon for tourist cities.
When I came to Finland, this was one of the most difficult “social constructs” to memorize. I always secured my bike with 2 or 3 padlocks in front of the supermarkets, and I was never quiet when my bike was out… for 2 years.

  5. Couldn’t think of an anal joke but yeah, if they can’t steal anything else, they’ll take the seat. Could be also that the seat has been stolen so many times that the owner takes it with him.

  6. Thats normal thing, as long as your bike has something attached with “quick release” thingys, those will be stolen and trown to trashcans, garafes roofs, forest or anything that happens to be close.

  7. Two options:
    Someone stole it or
Owner took it with him so that it wont be stolen

Especially if it has “quick lock” you want to take seat with you in case you have to leave bike there.

  8. Those bikes have been completely untouched and abandoned for months. I think it’s just vandalism.
I’ve actually kept my bike in that exact spot too, and during the first day the tires got punctured
