Details of ban on gas and oil home-heating systems to be known within weeks – The ban would apply to newly built homes from next year and to replacement installations in existing homes possibly as soon as 2025.

  1. Presume we would be getting grants so?

On the issue of grants – The heat pump grant is almost impossible to get with conditions on it and still dosent cover much of its cost. Maybe they should start on making it more accessible first? Shower of fucking gombeens

  2. Whatever about new houses it’s mad this could be introduced soon for existing houses. If your boiler needs to be replaced you may go for something like a heat pump. In order for that to be efficient your house needs to be well insulated, if not then that needs to be done. Also the tank and remaining kerosene needs to be properly disposed of.

Although all the above is good in the long term people will need to have the money to do it.

  3. And yet the Greens remained totally silent when the Mica redress scheme was being drafted, calling for houses to be rebuilt to early 2000 energy standards only.

  4. In the last year I have probably worked on 50ish council houses, all new builds, and every single one of them had chimneys for stoves.

  5. Gonna have to ramp up power generation pretty sharpish then eh? Or did Eamon sleep through that meeting too?

  6. Affording a heat pump is one thing. Affording the 50 grand retrofit for insulation, under floor pipes, new windows etc. Is a different story and is why many don’t have them yet

  7. Question for Eamonn……what are the alternatives to gas and oil? Because we don’t have a stable supply of electricity either?

  8. This is nuts for existing homes unless all work done is completely written off against income tax.

  9. Don’t know if I’m the only one thinking this, but I will be burning any fucking thing I can get my hands on this winter to keep my family warm and the heating off. Open fire – wood, trees shoes. Will stop on the side of the road if I see an old wardrobe.

And sleeping beauty here wants me to spent 30k on upgrades. Fuck right off. He’s gonna do more damage to the environment than ever. Prick.

  10. So there is going to be rolling blackouts this winter, we can’t increase our capacity for electricity generation to cover our existing problems in the short term and Eamon’s solution is to either a) increase the load on the already overloaded system or b) increase coal or peat consumption because they are more efficient at heating homes than gas or oil?

Seems awfully familiar to the Green’s endorsement of diesel and that has worked out wonderfully for the environment hasn’t it?

And people are questioning why TD’s deserve a raise..

  11. Completely crazy having this apply to existing homes. The Greens are not getting my vote again – rich out-of-touch gobshites who think we are all rolling in money.

  12. The ban for new houses can’t come soon enough, but replacing it in older homes will be very problematic.

  13. There is a 6k grant for a heat pump install right now. Sounds great, right? Except the cost to install a heat pump has gone up by about 6k. For my house, I’d need a 8kw heat pump. No other work needed, just install, plumb into existing UFH, etc. Quote is 13k. The heat pump unit costs 4k. So 9k for a days work for a plumber and electrician. It’s a fucking scam, and Eamon Ryan couldnt care less. In many cases a heat pump could be fully installed for the 6k grant, but no, seai don’t have any pricing guidelines.

  14. >Boilers in around half a million homes built during the construction boom from 2000-2010 are also approaching end of life and are due for replacement soon.

don’t i fucking know it, ours gave up during the summer €3k to replace. I don’t know where i would have gotten the €30k to retro fit installation and a great pump system

  15. Jaysus… had to replace a gas boiler just a few months back, don’t know now if that’s great or terrible timing. In an old apartment building, so don’t know what other heating options would be possible if/when it needs replacing.

  16. Green policies to make rich people feel good about themselves, while making those beneath them spend a fortune to be cold all winter.

  17. Houses have to be well insulated for most heat pumps to work well older houses that will be a problem

  18. This is more fantasy from Eamon Ryan. What are people gonna replace boilers with it if they can’t afford to retro fit their homes for heat pumps? Never going to work.

  19. And where do people get the money to transfer to a heat pump and retro-fit their houses ? Banning gas is just fucking ridiculously stupid, talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

  20. Don’t worry lad’s. I’m sure the intellectual giant Eamonn Ryan will think of solutions to all the problems this is gonna cause.

After all, isn’t this the man who solved world hunger with just a south facing windowsill.

  21. This being introduced to existing houses as a slap bang measure is fucking mental. If your boiler goes in the next while and you are being told you are limited to a heat pump or some other high-intervention system (ground source), there’s going to be tons and tons of houses that won’t be sufficiently heated. There just isn’t the skill-base or available work-force at reasonable cost to uprate the houses we have to be forced into heat pumps or even the after-sales teams to service them.
