Probably accidents: Children sees a gun and thinks this is a toy.
Edit: I forgot the suicides too.
I’d wager it’s young adult suicides that play a significant role in our numbers, to quote the article:
“Since estimates were not available for children ages 1-17 alone, young adults ages 18 and 19 are grouped with children for the purposes of this brief”
18 and 19 year olds can purchase firearms and some start military service as early as 18, which comes with an issued firearm. While no ammunition is currently issued, compatible cartridges can be obtained.
E: also while we don’t have much violent crime involving firearms, it happens occasionally, though usually within criminal circles and illegally obtained firearms.
Lol, I am not that good at statistic, but these numbers (exept the one for the us ofc) doesnt seem to be super meaningful. I would argue, they are much to close to each other, to actually make a meaningful difference. But I gladly let a statistic buff correct me, if I am wrong
My guess:
We have a lot of guns and most if not all cases are suicide.
I would guess every male not doing community service being forced to have a rifle at home is not the best idea. I would guess that makes about every fourth person having a rifle (25 Percent).
I mean, we have a fuck-ton of guns, so I guess accidents happen and gun suicide is easier.
My guess is suicide at barracks. One of my friends had someone who shot themselves during the RS. It was extremely messy because he didn’t die right away. Never read anything anywhere about it.
Maybe he was just trolling me but it seemed plausable and I wouldn’t be surprised.

They include everything up to the age of 19 as “children”. My guess: it’s mostly suicides by 18 and 19 year olds.
“US and peer countries” excludes pretty much every country under the sun where gun deaths are common (apart from the US obvs) so you need to look for differences between CH and the other places:
– Tiny little country with a tiny little population,
– Very relaxed gun laws compared to most of the other countries,
– Military service for men, which most of the other countries don’t have.
One clumsy mofo at the training yard and it’s 1/8th of a person per million inhabitants. 0,4 per 100K would be 4 per million, or a total of (4×8=32) young people dead from guns.
Between that age being more inclined to over-react (suicidally so) and them having guns with which to kill themselves, that would account for a few per year. Then you need a few klutzes in military training and a handful of halfwits taking a “fuck the police” approach to dealing with law enforcement, and it’s not so hard to get to a comparatively high number of gun deaths.
Even if the suicide rate is the same as in other countries, those other countries’ teens can’t use guns for it because they’re fucking hard to get (impossible unless you happen to know some pretty serious criminals, in some places). And because there aren’t a lot of Swissians, even a few self-inflicted gun shots skew the statistic.
