  1. Headline sounds bad enough anyway but it gets worse.

    >The council has already issued an enforcement notice on Caring ordering him to remove three “incongruous and dominant” windows, which it said “fail to preserve the character and appearance” of the conservation area.

So basically this guy was given planning permission to build X and just decided “screw them I’ll build what I originally wanted to not what I got planning permission for”.

    >Onslow Square, which links South Kensington underground station to Fulham Road, is used by the 14, 49, 345 and 414 bus routes, which haveall been placed on diversion. The road is also an important thoroughfare for ambulances carrying patients to the the Royal Marsden and Chelsea and Westminster hospitals. The emergency services had to be informed of the closure.

Hundreds if not thousands of peoples commutes to work and trips to hospital disrupted.

  2. Risky and tricky planting that many mature trees, its often better to plant smaller younger trees that can establish over time – but I suppose pissing thousands up the wall won’t matter

  3. Trees are great and we should be planting millions of them – but surely he can bring in saplings and not need to close a road for 2 weeks!

  4. Chelsea council, possibly the worst council in london (though tower hamlets is quite bad as well).

They *took out* the cycle lane on Kensington high street too. Now the main cycling route that connects central London to west London has a big gap in it.

  5. So is this the future? Private wealthy individuals closing roads as and when they feel like it with no benefit to the public? Unlike engineering or road works.

  6. We sure do love gulping down torrents of rich piss here in England! We can’t get enough of being hosed down by those privileged few.

  7. Wonder how much he’s being charged for the road closure. It normally costs sports events a decent chunk of change

  8. Apparently a hot take somehow: I don’t have a problem with this as long as:

    * A: The council has assessed what an appropriate fee would be to cover the costs of the inconvenience

    * B: He’s paid the fee

    * C: The fee money is used appropriately by the council

    * D: The public and other relevant bodies have been provided sufficient notice and detail of the road closure

Per the article, D has been met, but what about A, B and C? No mention.

  9. Where are all the people who were calling for extinction rebellion / insulate britain head when they were blocking roads?

  10. So, this guy replaces windows in breach of planning rules, the council issue an enforcement notice for it, but then also approves a 2 weeks road closure to install… trees? How about you don’t get road closures approved until you have fixed your planning breaches?

  11. We just a house in Greenwich council last year

It is in a conservation area.

It took blood, sweat and literal tears from me and my wife to get a shitty planning permission approved just to extend the kitchen and to get two tiny dormers in the loft put in. My wife who was heavily pregnant at the time was going through so much shit with the council being absolutle dicks and the process went on for 6 months just for them to admit their fucked up in their review process and agree at the end. We needed this planning permission for our growing family and to live in a comfortable space.

And this rich fucker gets to have cranes block off entire main roads to build a basement swimming pool, with most affluent councils pussy footing around him.

One rule for them, another rule for us.

  12. I look forward to Richard Madeley savaging him for disrupting the lives of ordinary people and even risking lives by delaying ambulances.

    Oh wait, that’s just protestors.

  13. How is this news roads are closed for days weeks months at times if you need a road to be closed you apply

  14. This is so fucked up. But that’s a regular billionaire for you. Either became a billionaire by inheritance and has been entitled ever since birth or exploited the hell out of people and counties to do so whilst creating a fucking circus road show.

  15. Christ… imagine if it was Insulate Britain doing this. “A stopped ambulance is a dead child” lament the dullards.
