‘There’s nothing more I can really cut’: the UK public on energy prices | UK cost of living crisis

  1. I’m pretty much on the bottom rung…live in sheltered housing,on pre payment meter, disabled,on legacy benefits…..there’s absolutely fuck all I can cut, apart from the lawn

  2. As an American reading this I am surprised. I read articles on how the UK has done such great job at green energy but it shows no benefit to the public.

  3. What doesn’t add-up for me is the retired builder, there has to be more to this story either that or I’m missing something obvious.

    >Lyndon Savage, a retired builder from Shaw, Greater Manchester, has been dealing with the increasing cost of living by using savings, which, he says, are dwindling rapidly.
    >
    >“I live on a state pension,” the 69-year-old says. “I regularly dip into my savings, my partner has a state pension and a small private pension and owns the house we live in, which is much better insulated and energy efficient than most.
    >
    >“I haven’t had time to work out exactly how much we’ll be paying for energy, but I can’t cut electric and gas usage any more, and fear what our bills will be this winter. At the moment my income falls short about £300 a month, my partner breaks even. If our bills will rise fivefold as predicted, we’ll both have to use our savings.”

    >Savage says his financial plan for retirement is in peril.

He has a state pension, his partner has a state and private pension, his partner owns the house and **I presume the mortgage is paid off.**

Their combined state pension should be around £15k, tax free. That’s roughly equivalent to a £18k job and they have no rent to worry about. Far from luxury I know but not abject poverty either.

He says he has a short fall of £300pcm is £3600. That’s mighty close to the new energy cap… I think he’s thinking him and his partner both need to find an extra £3500 (price cap) each, when in reality it’s £1.5k (assuming that they hit the price cap before).

  4. Indeed, I’ve got to the point to make any more cut backs I’d have to turn the fridge off

and I’ve got medicines that need to be stored in there

  5. I’ve lived like a church mouse my entire life and can’t think of a single thing I can turn down/off

I even have a microwave oven with no clock because those clocks use power. Guess I can turn off some of my plugs to off their LEDs – probably saves me a watt and then wastes more getting everything working against once activated

  6. If you have less limbs then you dont need as much food or heating. Nit saying you should cut your limbs off, just putting ideas out there

  7. Yet you have companies going on TV telling people to turn their devices off standby or to batch cook. That might be fine for people who are managing but would like to save a few hundred quid a year, however it is meaningless for the many who cannot afford to use those devices or batch cook in the first place. We are doing nothing to help those at the bottom, as if we refuse to acknowledge they even exist.

  8. I can (probably will) cut near enough all recreational spending, and I assume a lot of people will be in the same boat. I’m well aware that has dire implications for the recipients of that recreational spending, but I have to put me and mine first.

It’s the government who have to factor in that reaction to the consequences for the wider economy. I can’t imagine they want to see a national economic death spiral come to fruition. Then again, maybe they really are just that inept.

  9. I agree with the person who said that something isn’t right here. All their stories seem too dramatic. For most of these cases the increases will be covered by the £400 payment and plus the pensioners will have other payments. The NHS lady needs to find a house mate/mates to share costs with and save for a flat.

  10. It’s disgusting how some people are forced to live on this sh*hole island. I personally think crime is a perfectly legitimate option now. If you only steal from the rich, who gives a fck.
