What do you think: Is Switzerland a high- or low context culture (as described by Edward Hall).

Do you think there are regional/cantonal differences or certain groups. How would you classify them? And did you observe situations where high/low context speakers regularly have issues to find common ground?

  1. More on the high context side, especially compared to Germany. A bit lower than in England but there are a lot of similarities of ‘fake’ politeness and not showing your true feelings. I’m not sure about regional differences, the parts closer to France or Italy might behave differently.

  2. High-context amongst Swiss and families in their second generation in Switzerland.

    Low-context amongst foreigners / expats

  3. Could you give stereotypical examples of countries with high- or low- context culture? Looks like Switzerland is a country were people have few social relations, probably more long-lasting, but I’m not sure it’s not the case for *all* human societies (high- and low- context culture would probably be more interestingly applied to specific contexts, like home or work, not to a global society)
