Cool, the cheapest energy bills for the next few years.
I can’t understand why people aren’t on the streets protesting about these prices, I’m on a 2 year fix for 1 more year but even my good salary I’d feel the pinch at paying what I’d assume would be 450-500 a month
Recession incoming and thousands of businesses to close.
Good morning fellow countrymen; we’re fucked. More at 8, but first here’s Jeff on sports.
I thought the idea of a price cap is that it was a cap. And didnt change frequently. This cap is changing as frequently as the price
Just for information if its helpful, to calculate the cost of your power this winter, you need to perform the following calculation:
Look at your monthly bills from last winter (the actual amount charged, not the direct debit).
Multiply that number by 2.78
For example, if it cost you £100 a month last winter, it will cost you £278 a month this winter.
That is how you calculate how this actually affects you. As the price cap itself doesn’t really provide useful information like that.
_____
For those interested, the factor 2.78 was calculated as follows: New price cap/last winters price cap: 3,549/1,277 = 2.78.
New price caps are (1 October – 31 December 2022)
Electricity £0.52 per kwh, Daily standing charge: £0.46
Gas £0.15 per kwh, Daily standing charge: £0.28
Previous cap (1 April – 30 September 2022)
Electricity £0.28 per kwh, Daily standing charge: £0.45
Gas £0.07 per kwh, Daily standing charge: £0.27
Yeah okay, that’s just completely unpayable if you’re on benefits. So electric will be around £0.51/kwh give or take then with the increase. It was hard to afford electric before this, even if you barely use any. Standing charge + fridge/freezer alone are going to cost too much to keep running.
Well it’s going to be a bumper year for burning wood. By far the cheapest option.
This is what happens when you go to war with the country that feeds you.
Our politics needs simplification, the failure to prepare for both the pandemic, and this failure of energy security must trigger a reset in our political system.
The Ofgem site says the average cost per unit of electricity will go from 28p to 52p and the standing charge will increase from 45p to 46p.
With gas increasing from 7p to 15p, standing charge increases from 27p to 28p.
That’s an 86% increase in electricity and 114% for gas.
I’m sure there must be some things that aren’t fucked, but I haven’t the slightest idea what they would be.
I don’t even see why electricity has to increase so much when UK produces some of their own?
It feels like we’re in a giant game of monopoly where there’s a few rich people who won’t be happy until they have *everything*, forgetting that in monopoly when someone has everything, the game ends for everyone. Including them..
£9.72 a day!
Just to have the lights and heating on.
That is fucking outrageous.
Really gonna have to start monitoring what I’m using really closely. I’m about to become an expert on energy consumption. I’ve no idea how swathes of the country will even manage.
If I’ve done the maths properly, it looks like my bill is going to go up to £336 a month with this increase. Fuck.
It’s time to throw this rubbish Gov’t on the fire, and revaluatate the direction the Nation is moving in. When in crisis history has shown that we can all work together to solve problems with hard work, intelligent, and compassion and support for everyone.
This country is more than just a few horrible, prattling, dogma-ridden, inbred, numpties.
I’m really curious why this is such a problem for the UK, when we hear that Europe has taken steps to mitigate these increases.
I live in Vietnam, and I don’t know where they get their power from, but the cost of my gas, electricity and water together comes to less than 10 quid a month.
I’m sat here thinking I should have taken a 2 year fix back in March where it would have been a 40% increase and now as I’m on the standard rate its now going to be 80% with the standing charges likely going up as well.
Bugger.
I’m thick. I don’t get it. Explain it to me please someone;
I get gas is an issue with Russia etc. Why is electricity? Octopus gleefully tell me that my leccy is from 100% renewable resources. Why is my electric skyrocketing?
Don’t mind me, just heading back to work because no amount of overtime is going to be enough to pay my bills this winter. Cheers Boris
So… At what point have we had enough of this bollocks?
Every MP can claim &get their energy bills paid by us ,the tax payers
I feel really sick now. Like, I actually think I’m going to be sick.
I don’t know how I’m going to afford to keep my little girl warm.
The worst thing about all this isnt just the price, its that its almost a lottery.
If you were lucky to get a fixed deal you could be quids in, if you move house or are just about to exit a fixed deal you are screwed.
I was concerned for my Mum so went over and checked and she is on a fixed deal until mid 2024. Not only is her electricity cheaper than the current cap, but they actually reduced her bill and gave her a refund because she was over paying. My aunty however is not on a deal and will end up paying twice as much. Im trying to find her a deal now.
As always this hurts the poorest and least able in society. Its frankly disgusting.
£96 was my highest bill over winter, that will now be £266. That’s more than half my mortgage payment.
You can’t really call it a cap when it changes 4 times a year
… what am I supposed to do. How can I pay this? I don’t. What am I going to do.
Because the rich Tories are in power. Eventually though we will reach breaking point. Possibly this winter when people must choose between heat or food.
Rioting in the streets is a possibility
To quote Martin Lewis
1. There is no actual cap on the max you can pay.
2. What’s capped is standing charges and unit rates
3. £3,549 is the cap for those on average use, Direct Debit, Dual fuel.
The working class outnumber the rich yet they still vote Tory and allowed them to remain in power for 10+ years. Literally a case of Turkeys voting for Christmas.
It’s soon going to get to the point where families move in with each to share bills. 2 or 3 families all cooped together in a 3 bed semi. Dickensian
Something super ironic and depressing about a ‘cap’ being raised every 3-6 months. Not really a fucking cap is it.
This is just criminal now, people should be going to prison for this.
I know the UK public take a lot without doing much back, but I honestly think this is what will be the straw that breaks the camels back. I would expect to see mass civil unrest here, people taking to the streets.
Genuinely a bit bemused with this. Can someone explain to me how British Gas reports 5x their annual profits, fuel companies report record profits, but the price cap still goes up?
Having worked in gas trading (albeit tech) almost a decade ago I got very interested in the UK energy industry. At the time I didn’t understand this infatuation with gas, and new gas power generation. It pushes up our trade deficit, and requires building a dependency on unreliable actors like Russia and Middle Eastern emirates. Albeit we’ve now weaned off Russia, but the global surge in prices has left us here
For decades has been an incredibly successful lobbying push that “cheap gas is cheap electricity and anyone who says otherwise, or dare mentions renewables, is an eco nut job”. The truth is, perusing a fossil fuel dependent electricity grid, for a country with little to no no fossil fuels does not make sense, has never made sense and we are now paying the price.
It’s time we seriously start asking why there is a magic money tree for Ukraine and not for the people going to be hit by this.
Vote Tory and you get shit. Seriously, Boris tub of lard hasnt done anything to stop this. UK government has the power to stop these price hikes but they chose not to. Bastards.
So many pubs, restaurants, fish & chips shops etc will be closed by January. No way can they absorb this – so more people out of work and living in poverty on the dole then. This government and the people who voted for them all deserve a place to burn in hell.
What this amounts to is the aspirations of several generations wiped out.
Aspiration is dead in the UK.
A broken country with a broken political system, sucked dry by capitalist vultures.
Thank god for Martin Lewis is all I have to say. That man needs a knighthood. He’s out there today, pleading all over our media to the government to help us, to stop this. He’s passionate and he gives a toss. I just wish we could speak the same values of the current government. They appear to be hellbent on making us homeless then freeze and starve us to death.
