Rising energy bills put millions of UK households at risk of winter catastrophe

  1. I’m just awaiting the government to address relaxing laws around pay day loans and prostitution to help tackle this problem /s

  2. This will encourage the workshy Brits to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, stop lounging around on generous benefits, and start grafting.

At least, I *think* that’s the government’s policy.

  3. They’re now reframing this as a war effort. Zahawi even came out with this belter:

    > “Putin has worked out that he can use energy as a tool to hit back at us,” he said. “And we’re going to need to send a message back to Putin that this is not going to soften our resolve.”

That sound you can hear? Thousands of Little Englanders jumping for joy, because they can finally get to live out their Blitz and rationing fantasies.

  4. I’m not usually a doomer, but an 80% price increase with energy bills is absolutely and unequivocally unacceptable on any level.

Where are the government and why are they not doing anything? ( rhetorical question )

I mean, we’re literally being abandoned, there’s a massive transfer of wealth going on and we’re not even taking to the streets.

    Wtf is going on?

I dunno, maybe it’s all that sewage in the water.

  5. Tier the price cap. First band for essential use is cheap like last year. Then tiers of higher kwh prices all the way up. Let the rich and luxurious pay the cost for their excessive energy use.

  6. I’m honestly terrified, I’m not going to get into everything, but we’ve always been fairly poor, but I managed to earn enough to at least live in modest comfort.

Due do our living circumstances, living with my parents who are both retired and a sibling with a disability, we use more electricity than the average household. The costs are just.. impossible, literally impossible.

I work for the NHS, and even if I did every extra shift I could and never took a day off, I would still never be able to afford the bills coming this winter.

Any simple pleasures I once had are gone. I have a 60 gallon tropical fish tank, had it for 15 years, its my pride and joy, but if the cost of living gets any higher I’m going to have to flush all the wee cunts down the toilet. Coming home from a stressful shift in A&E and doing something as simple as watching Netflix or sitting on the computer is just a no go.

My monthly earnings simply won’t be able to cover the bills shortly, and that’s not even taking into account rising inflation.

No payrise the government or even unions offer will be able to deal with this, they would have to double my wages to even make a dent in it.

All this on the back of working on the front lines during covid, what was the point in all the lockdowns, to save the elderly, just to let them freeze to death this winter?

Any dreams I had for the future are gone, were honestly going to go from a poor but modestly comfortable first world lifestyle, to pre-industrial third world conditions in the next 6 months.

  7. This is going to destroy people’s finances. Even those who have the money are going to have to spend their savings to make it through.

I can see people leaving pension schemes and selling things, all to pay for gas and electric.

We need a vote of no confidence in this government.
