‘Shock and awe’ of huge energy bills will frighten families into curbing energy use, Government expects

  1. France has capped energy prices until next year.
But our government thinks letting people receive crushing energy bills will scare them into using less. Which it probably will, I can see a lot of pensioners too scared of their bill to turn the heating on.

  2. Tell me, does any family intentionally uses more power than they need to? The government doesn’t want to do anything, so they expect everyone else too.

  3. Christ but this country is crying out for a General Election. Our people desperately need a change in government.

  4. You just need to grow some rapeseed in your back garden, buy a oil producer and install a converted boiler. We might give you a grant for to make it all solar powered. – Eamon Ryan, probably.

  5. They really don’t live in the real world.

They have plenty of money and can afford the increase.

  6. Honestly if most people used less energy we’d be sitting in the cold and dark. Meanwhile data centres are eating up energy like crazy.

A price cap on bills would be the government showing us that they’re trying at least, but of course that’s too much of an ask. There’ll probably be civil unrest if people can’t keep their families safe and warm during winter despite working and paying to keep the lights on.

  7. The shock and awe will make us reduce use and as soon as they can see it the government will throw up a few balloons re energy prices/social support and see what’s popular and implement that in the budget in Oct.

  8. Next : “we plan to tackle obesity in the nation by making food prohibitively expensive, this will “shock” everyone into eating less”…

  9. Yet more proof, if it were needed, that this coalition cares more about its unrealistic agendas than it does its responsibility to the people of the country they are tasked with leading.

  10. Try this, the number #1 regular user of electricity in the house? The Freezer. Always on,always freezing a few pizzas or ice cream. Well l have gone and bought a mini fridge,a quarter of the size of my fridge, keeps milk, beer and butter, sausages etc cold but l have no freezer now and do l miss it? No! I had great joy in unplugging my big fridge last week and now l store tinned foods in there, like a press! I dont buy ice cream anymore,l rarely buy pizzas or junk food and if l do l eat them that day,it’s WIN WIN. I cannot wait for my next bill, minus two months freezer use,it will be interesting.

  11. FF/FG/Greens: “Everyone time to tighten the belts this Christmas, and cut down on electricity usage. No other way to get through this difficult time.”

Also FF/FG/Greens: “Delighted to announce the opening of the 865th data centre in Ireland which gobbles up 15% of national energy consumption.”

  12. Its not just energy bills – the soaring cost of energy is causing inflation of the price of everything. How can I curb my *mortgage* use?

  13. Socialise the failure, turn off your lights, heating and everything else says Eamo.

Meanwhile Data centres go brrrrrr !!

  14. Can all the political parties agree that as a country it is a strategic and moral imperative that we have a secure and affordable supply of energy, and devise a plan to achieve this.

Neanderthal man managed to solve the challenge of shelter and heat, could we aspire to the same. I expect to see manned flight to Mars happen first.

    Make consensus sexy again.

  15. lol fuck this “use less power” green agenda bullshit.

    >The Cabinet will today sign off on a plan to advise public sector bodies to set their heating systems to 19 degrees where appropriate in an effort to conserve energy and reduce costs this winter.

FUCK OFF just fuck off with this shite already. And you know full fucking well all the TDs are comfortable

  16. We have a supply issue here because of shit infrastructure. So we have to curb usage – they should be things like the Germans and banning lights in offices overnight etc.

But we also have a cost issue, which the government should be tackling aggressively and in a way that doesn’t just make electricity companies richer

  17. We have Air to Water heating. Our upstairs and downstairs thermostat are turned down as low as they will go (5 degrees). I do one washing per day at 9pm on 30 degrees and I put what I can out to dry around the house and the rest goes into the tumble dryer. We have energy saving bulbs all over the house and don’t leave any lights on at night bar whatever room we are using if we are still awake. We have no electric blankets or electric shower, just whatever water the heating system has already heated. We wash our eldest two girls together and our toddler comes into the shower with me. We got rid of our fish tanks.

If our next energy bill is higher than the last, I really don’t see what it could possibly shock me out of using. The kids do part of their homework online now, so there needs to be at least one device in the house charged for them to access. Baffling what they think this will achieve!

  18. So an interesting question, do you think it’ll scare any of the politicians into curbing energy use? I very much doubt it.

  19. What kind on uneducated thicks do we have in government

What do they think people are doing? There’s a reason why people are asking “how is my bill this high when I already do XYZ”

  20. It is so fucking clear that the Irish government does not know the fucking purpose of government… who the fuck thinks that this is an okay mindset by these cunts?

  21. They need to drive down the standing charge while they’re at it a lot the cost is being added to that. Fully funding retrofitting for old homes would be of benefit as well that would have the biggest impact on electricity demand

  22. Politicians have forgotten who they serve. How was it that people used to remind them? Oh yeah… murder. I’ll be out the back sharpening the ol’ guillotine blade

  23. So basically beyond the 200 euro back in spring the gov have done nothing.
No plan, bo targeted strategic approach with tailored plans for each outcome.

All thry have is turn the heating down in public buildings and a probably a leaflet sent to households about reducing electricity use.

Theyve had 6 months to plan for the winter and they have done absolutly nothing.

  24. I never seen a worse time for FF and FG, My Da who is about to be 50 has been voting for FF since he was 18 but this shit with Robert troy and energy bills has completely turned him off them, many people I know who always voted FF and FG just won’t anymore, and the ones that will might be dead after winter this year.

  25. So, maybe I’m a bit slow. Rising prices will scare the fuck outta people so they’ll just not use it? Is this the support they’ve think tanked with three parties?

  26. >But there are growing concerns among senior Coalition figures that people will be unable to pay their energy bills, with some acknowledging the possibility of mass non-compliance akin to what happened with water charges nearly a decade ago.
“That’s happening all over the EU,” the government figure said.

A mass non compliance would be ideal. In my ideal world Leo and Michael would become such hated figures they’d have leave Ireland, as they don’t deserve to live among us.

  27. Every cloud has a silver lining. If things are cheap, people waste them. It’s human nature. Energy has been too cheap for far too long.

Downvoting me won’t change that but please do downvote me to show how little you understand about the world.
