The first pay deal in history for the early years sector, it’s a start but starting at 13 euro an hour and only reaching to 17.25 for a managers role who has a level 8 degree doesn’t seem like a lot in today’s financial climate. Studying for a degree is so expensive alone
Just wait for the shocked pikachu face parents slap on in a few months when childcare costs go up.
Herself is qualified but given the part time nature of most ECCE places, it just doesn’t pay enough to go back to it as a career. You might only do 15-20 hours a week, at 13 an hour… it’s better than a tenner, but it’s still quite rubbish.
Well deserved, that job is a vocation I don’t know how anybody does it.
I’m childfree so no skin in the game, but I’d like childcare to be provided by the State, providing you work X number of hours, at a capped price (maybe €140 a week?), plus free after-school programmes. Alongside this, pay similar to school teachers and TAs.
Good. I couldnt personally do their job. Unfortunately the big name creches will probably pass the cost on to parents.
This country just isnt set up for parents to work here like it is in other countries. Breakfast clubs & afterschools in my village are colossal & have to be used for the full week. I work shift work & my husband is starting a new job so he will no longer be wfh. I’ll have to change my hours & take a massive wage reduction to accommodate childcare. Im very greatful I can do it but working shift meant I had 85hrs spaced over the month but now I’ll be 10-2 mon- fri. Im thankful I’ll be around for the kids.
My wife has been paying €14 to her staff for years. Why? Cause she’s not a greedy cunt.
Just goes to show the value of joining a union and organising your workplace.
Delighted for them and the work they put into the big start campaign over the last few years.
