Inspectors raise concerns over animal welfare at Dublin Zoo

  1. Zoos need to be shut down. What the fuck are animals from Africa doing in Ireland in the first place?

They’re not here to entertain us. It’s fucked.

  2. I’ve always felt Dublin Zoo either needs to be relocated or expanded massively. The enclosures with the exception of the African Plains are tiny. The tigers and lions are essentially in cells, they have so little space.

I appreciate the work they do for conservation but they need to improve what they have.

  3. Finally, it used to be a downvote magnet to speak ill of Dublin Zoo and while I’m sure their hearts are in the right place, it should be shut down.

  4. We went a year ago. In the hippo enclosure one hippo kept jumping in to one end of it’s small concrete water pool and swimming to he other end, it got out went back to the other end and repeated the process.

This went on for twenty minutes. We all agreed it seemed like unhealthy behaviour. Brought it up with a keeper who said it was normal. Hmm.

  5. I went a couple of weeks ago ….it was shit, most of the enclosures were not maintained. Trees and bushes badly overgrown that you couldn’t see the animals.

It’s that bad, Belfast zoo is better.

  6. End all Zoos. The operate under the guise of breeding programs for endangered animals. They are nothing but money making machines which hurt and exploit animals. The polar bear is etched into my mind as a child 😭

  7. Anyone know why certain comments can’t be upcoted in this thread but the down vote button works fine for them?

Never had this issue before, is it to deter brigading certain comments?

  8. Something that bothered me about Dublin Zoo was that Wild Lights thing they did a few years back.

What they did was basically install loads of light sculptures throughout the zoo and had a few locations they put on shows, one of them was acrobatics.

People came in when it was dark to have a look at the lights and to see the shows.

The zoo made it clear that the animals would be in their night-time enclosures and sleeping. I wondered how the animals could be sleeping well with all the lights, the huge numbers of people milling around and all the noise from the shows. I would imagine that some animals would be having a pretty bad experience because it was so different from what they would be used to at night-time. A bit like how a dog freaks out when there are fireworks.

It just seemed weird and a little bit irresponsible to have an event like that in a zoo.

  9. I went there before the revamp, as a kid in the 1980s. The wolves and Polar bears had auto repetitive pacing/shuffling, carving paths into their enclosures and head swaying. I was traumatised and never went back.

The Polar bears in particular. The animals seemed insane, which they probably were.
