This happens when people require the feeling of being outraged by something, to be able to live with ones personal inadequacies.
We did the same thing except we were lined up under the thread and were allowed to roll out until given permission by tapping our backs something like 1 meter before the thread would crush us.

my dad told me he had to do the same thing once. he said his backpack clipped the underside of the tank and lifted his head up a bit and the down when the backpack got free.
