Told my social insurance I was going to visit USA

  1. Now try to get one of these certificates from Europe Assistance. Last time I had to wait 6 weeks.

    ”But we are very busy”

Yeah that’s a relief, if it takes 6 weeks for a stupid document how long will it take for complex medical situations.

  2. Put it in you pocket / purse. I’ve been told by expats that in case of emergency, the nurses will first search for this paper, and then search for your pulse. Serious.

  3. Smart decision to have this. Though, from what I’ve gathered from Reddit, I wonder if US hospitals will see this as an opportunity to milk you with redundant tests because you have good insurance.

  4. I always have to take these with me to certain countries as well. Best experience was a border guard explaining that she never saw unlimited coverage so it had to be nonsense. Called someone over and eventually let me go, but told me to enjoy explaining it to a hospital.

  5. Can’t hurt to have it but I can almost guarantee you’ll be entered as “self pay/uninsured” if you go to the ER for something.

[This is what a US insurance card looks like.](https://connect.bcbstx.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-wikis-components-files/00-00-00-00-02/MemberIDnumberBCBSTX.jpg)

And without a valid set of those IDs/Codes they cannot put you in to their system as insured.

That said, you will still receive excellent care, and the ziekenfonds will take care of the bill afterwards, no doubt. So don’t sweat it too much.

Source: lived here 20+ years, been hospitalized both with and without insurance.

  6. Funny that they don’t even take the time to personalise the text: he or she. So I guess you can be whoever you want to be in America.

  7. Smart. If you would this to a usa citizen and tell him this ‘unlimited health coverage’ isnt even €1000/y. It would blow their mind.

  8. When I was hospitalised in the US, I had a DKV insurance card. They looked at it, and then asked for my VISA… this letter will do nothing.

  9. I found it absolutely ludicrous when we immigrated to the US that I had to prove that I could prove I could take care of, and be solely responsible for, my wife – as if we came to the US to take advantage of the social security system ditching our Belgian coverage.

No, we absolutely love paying twice our employee stipend a month to the insurer to have the *privilege* of having the insurer ***co-insure*** **after** we reach our yearly out-of-pocket deductible of $2800, before which they do jack shit except for some preventive costs (with co-pay!).

  10. You need this tho, in America they can deny you treatment even if you have a life threatening situation. If you have no insurance or they arnt sure, there is no docter that’s gonna help you

  11. Interesting. I thought since most if not all national health services use Mutas de US wasn’t covered anymore but it looks like Solidaris still covers the US. CM for example doesn’t. For a long time now already.

  12. Oh wow, I’ve been to the US 3 times and I never thought of having a document like that on me. I will definitely do now. I remember having a Mutas card but not this. The last time I was there I had a bad stomach virus, using a suspicious online doctor and paid in total with meds 45 dollars. Came out totally fine but for worst cases i’d have been doomed lol

  13. They messed up the DATES, americans use the shitty month/day/year format.

    there gonna be so confused

  14. Im visiting Massachussettes next to see the battleship USS massachussettes. Imma tattoo my health insurance plan on me just in case

  15. If you need any medical care at all while in the States, may I suggest walking in to a clinic while playing ‘Damn it feels good to be a gangsta’.

    Just saying .

  16. If you’re half dead needing emergency care, would they really first have to know if you’re insured before saving your life?!?!

  17. What are the chance of American hospitals refusing service because they have the risk of costs not being paid because they haven’t followed Belgian rules regarding social security?

Isn’t one of those rules that you charge only a certain amount for certain procedures? “Geconventioneerd”

  18. Pretty sure he/she also has a **complementary** insurance, not “complimentary”, which would mean it was given for free to OP which might be the case but is totally irrelevant in this letter.
