I saw the yarn-covered map earlier today and that made me wonder how old this map is I have hanging in my living room. It doesn’t mention any year or date, company or printer… (It may have mentioned it at some point but the edges are a little damaged from being rolled up and down I guess, I don’t mind, it’s part of the charm).
If you have any information about this, I am very interested. I know nothing about it. Thanks!
Isn’t it written somewhere?
At least 1995 considering Brabant.
Oh so i was too far back in time
It’s definently from after 1918/1919 because Eupen-Malmedy is included in Belgian territory and before 1995 because Brabant is still one. It also doesn’t show the language border which was established in 1962. So my best bet would be between 1919 and 1962.
Border of province Henegouwen with West-Vlaanderen (and also Limburg with Luik I believe) hasn’t changed since 1963. Because the map shows a different border than that of today, the map will probably predate that year, although not guaranteed.
it’s amazing but i remember a map allot like this hanging in a history classroom 20 years ago. I remember it because i stared at it for hours wondering what the orange-yellow border with the netherlands represented. I feel like i asked the teacher once but i can’t for the life of me remember the answer. I feel like maybe it had something to do with WW 1? i could be totally off here. What a strange thing to have a memory triggered like this lol.
Guessing also from before establishment of BDR, considering it’s just called “Duitsland” there. Probably even from before the Reich, then? So 1919-1933?
Edit: what’s the text at the bottom of the legend?
What are the numbers on the bottom left and right?
It´s been narrowed down a lot already, you might get lucky with the inhabitants sizes of the mentioned cities. If city X grew in to size B, while city Y is still in size C, the range could get smaller. If you do this for all cities, you could end up with a small range, or a specific year even.
It’s from before 1963 , because Voeren Fourons is not Limburg.
The spelling looks like 1950’s to me, so 1950-1962
It’s from before 2013 because you can’t see the Nieuwe Maasvlakte in NL near Rotterdam.
It’s from after 6000 BC because the landbridge between the British Isles and mainland Europe is submerged.
The ferry between Harwich and Atwerp stopped its service in 1950.
It’s around 1960 I think. I have a very similar one of Asia. Same frame
I came to say I eyeballed it to the 1950’s since it fit the style of the era. Very pleased to see people with actual brains confirming my intuition
1830-2022
Ask on r/MapPorn, they always find out
This is why I love reddit: a random person asked from which year this map is and another person give a period and then another person narrows that period and again and again till you’re left with a 6 year window
Man I fucking love Reddit!
sheeit all i know about belgium is between gare du nord and gare du midi… whoami and what year i was born in?
You should go to geopunt.be where you can choose a map based on the time period
It still has the Netherlands on it, so it must be from before 2027.
Probably from the early 1950s. These were very common, not just for geography but also biology, history etc. I have 6 history ones I bought in a second hand shop decades ago and they were from 1952.
Mine even look like they’re from the same printer. Does it say “Aug. Bossaerts & Zn, Antwerpen” in the lower right corner?
Does anyone know if these are valuable? I have a ton of these old educational charts and graphics.
50s -60s
Did they just reduce Belgium to 1/5th on that map just to include London on it? I mean, all that France area is wasted space.
