Finland responds to Russia’s call for guarantees against NATO’s eastward expansion

  1. NATO would do better to dissuade Finland from this idea that they can join whenever they want to.

What’s the point of a military alliance if you can stay out of it, only to join when you need protection?

  2. “Currently, 50% of Finns oppose NATO membership while 25% support it”

Surprising numbers, honestly. Is this mostly a “don’t poke the bear” response? Most Finns are worried about pissing off Russia?

  3. At the Yalta meeting, the allies agreed to put Finland under the Soviet sphere of influence. During the post-war occupation of Finland, the Soviets were quite content to let Finland take the lead in drawing up a treaty of neutrality. Once that was signed, the Soviets quickly left, even returning land it had been awarded under the Paris Treaty, and Finland kept its word and stayed neutral ever since. I think that trust still lingers between Russia and Finland.

  4. We have good relations with Finland. Trade is at an all time high and we get along really well with them. Finnish people are not stupid. They know that Russia is already on the edge when it comes to NATO encroachment and backing the Bear further into a corner is extremely dangerous.

  5. As a Finn it is clear to me that we need russia for trade, joining nato does not support our economy in the slightest, its just another cash grab.

  6. Even without NATO, Russians will not mess with Finland because it’s a lose-lose situation. Same vice versa.

There’s no reason to pay loads of tax money to bring huge troop support over without a need, or worse, further tensions.
