Russia switches off Europe’s main gas pipeline until sanctions are lifted

  1. They won’t keep it off for long, they need the money that the rest of Europe pays them for gas. Especially as their economy is already suffering, and their army is under increasing strain (not enough weapons, not enough vehicles, not enough soldiers – they’ve started to recruit recently from prisons and homeless shelters).

  2. That’s significant. And even though EU have agreed to import from China, chances are China will buy from Russia and inflate the price so the only ones to loose out will be EU.

  3. This is what will happen: The EU (mainly Germany) will end up buying gas from India or China or another BRICS country, these countries will get their supply from Russia and sell it to the EU at a massive markup. Literally a win/win situation for Russia in addition to huge hypocrisy from the EU.

    !remindme 5 months

  4. Have the sanctions done anything , or is it impossible to know because Russia doesn’t disclose anything ?

In February people were saying Russia would be bankrupt in 3 weeks.

  5. A real big question is if Russia maintains any capability to pump gas and oil- even if there were no sanctions. Russia’s inefficient fossil fuel sector relied heavily on foreign workers and technology.

Also, long term, this is disastrous for Russia. If Europe finds alternatives for energy (new gas suppliers in Algeria/Azerbaijan- green technology), Russia will forever lose its share in a very lucrative market, and need huge reinvestment into infrastructure into Asia (which will be for less money- why would India pay more for gas from Russia as it currently pays).

Russia has been making some seriously terrible strategic mistakes, including starting the damn war. This is another huge error. Short-term pain for Europe, long-term annihilation for Russia.

PS. We need to rid ourselves of fossil fuels, at least to not have to deal with terrible Countries like Russia and Saudi Arabia.

  6. Good. It was pretty clear this was gonna happen so it happened sooner i guess so at least we know we have to fully commit to other parties for energy sourcing. Fuck Putin. Hope he rots from inside, that piece of shit.

  7. Well it looks like Russia just helped us make a big jump to meeting our climate changing emissions targets.

  8. I at least find them declaring their true intentions refreshing. It’s high time we got past this bully passive aggressive bullshit. “We HAD to shut it down. Because of YOUR mean ol Sanctions we can’t do maintenance. What ARE we to do?”

Cards on the table with these scumbags is preferable.

  9. We really need to focus on being energy dependent. It’s crazy that we can’t provide enough power using renewable sources that we have available on this island.

  10. Well, it’s not like any European energy company will ever deal with Russia again. Sanctions aside, they’ve shown themselves to be totally unreliable, aggressive and willing to cut off supplies at a whim. Whatever about the short term this year as things adapt, they’ve effectively slapped their main customer across the face and they’re highly unlikely to come back.

  11. Hopefully someone is on the edge of discovering sme new way of producing energy and this will force countries to adopt it quickly annnnnnnd Russia oligarchy implodes and is replaced with a proper democratic government.

  12. Fuck him. Hopefully Europe doesn’t fold. Things are gonna suck, but it’s better than letting this cunt get his way.

  13. Kinda seems like it will be a winter in the 80s.

    Get dressed under the covers.

Cold? Few more blankets on the bed.

Cold in the house – ‘Put on a jumper so’

  14. All the shite spewed about “freezing to death”. Indoors, in modern houses, with modern clothing, in Ireland, one of the mildest climates in Europe. Not going to happen.

If people can’t stick on a jumper as a small gesture to put an end to a murderous despot, we truly are fucked.

  15. A lot of cope going on here. It’s Important to remember that the situation in Ireland is not the same as mainland Europe. They’re shutting down factories there as they can’t afford to keep them open. Irish people will have high bills and be cold. The Germans will be have high bills and also be cold, broke and jobless. The UK isn’t far behind. When the EU and British economies really start to tank then it’s gonna drag Ireland down with it.

They’re also spending money like crazy. The Germans agreed another €65B package yesterday. Liz truss is talking about a £100B relief package. This can very easily spill over into a financial crisis which will compound the current problems. The markets are already taking note. The pound has hit a 20 year low against the dollar. The euro is at 99c to the dollar. Go figure.
