Hi all,
I’ve been calculating taxes.
The official calculators are a bit too complex for me.

So I’ve used this -> [https://fi.talent.com/en/tax-calculator?salary=5000&from=month®ion=Finland](https://fi.talent.com/en/tax-calculator?salary=5000&from=month®ion=Finland)
Which says for 5000 EUR/m net pay is **€ 2,823.**

But this -> [https://relocate.me/net-pay-calculators/finland](https://relocate.me/net-pay-calculators/finland)
Says, for 5000 EUR/m net pay is **€ 3117.**

So there’s a clear difference. Any idea which one is more accurate?

You should definitely use the official one, because that’s the one that is used on your tax card.
Do the other calculators take other deductions into account, or only taxes? You need to add 8,75 (or something around that) to your tax percentage to include all other deductions that are made from your salary.
There are also some personal qualities that affect the final tax percent, so that’s one more reason to use the official one.
Is it important down to last 100€? If not, a rough estimate is enough. I personally don’t even know what my net income is as I am too lazy to check it
Use the Verohallinto calculator and just ignore everything that doesn’t apply to you. At a guess 5000€ gross will be roughly 3300€ net after tax and social security deductions.
Municipal tax rates wary. You should know where you live for the exact amount.
And you only pay church-tax if you are part of one of our national churches.
If you earn 5k you should get about 3100€ a month net income if you live in Helsinki and dont pay church tax.
Well i did a quick calculation with the official calculator on 5000/month salary for 60000eur annual and the results are:
tax payable for the year: 14 129,98e
This was without spouses, kids or any tax benefits or breaks like commuting or income investment expenses.
edit: this calculation includes all other deductions as well like mandatory insurances etc.
Last one is the closest by personal experience but Vero.fi is the most accurate.
The second one is closer to accurate, however the difference between 2823€ and 3117€ is negligible.
Here are quick instructions on how to do the computation in [Vero.fi](https://Vero.fi):
Let ut assume 5000 EUR/month gross salary in 2022. In “Kotikunta” choose your municipality. If you don’t have one, use Helsinki. For “Seurakunta”, if you are member of the Lutheran or Orthodox church, choose the corresponding option, otherwise choose “Ei kirkollisverovelvollinen”. In “Syntymävuosi” set your year of birth. (I’m putting in 1987)
“Onko sinulla puolisoa?” Do you have a spouse, yes/no. (I’m putting in no)
“Alaikäisten lasten lukumäärä” The number of children under the age of 18. (I’m putting in 0)
“Invaliditeettiprosentti” you can set to 0 to both fields, it only applies if you receive pension on the basis of being incapacitated beyond working capacity.
” Oletko vakuutettu muualla kuin Suomessa?” Asks if your EU social security is outside Finland. Choose “Ei” if you intend to live and work in Finland.
Under “Tulot” (income), place your yearly income in “Koko vuoden arvio” (estimate for the entire year). If you don’t know better, put in 12.5 * 5000 = 62 500 because this figure includes the potential holiday bonus that is included in most fields (half a month’s salary paid in July). If you’re only interested in your net income on an annual basis, you can leave “Saadut tulot” (income recieved earlier this year) and “Ennakonpidätys” (taxes deducted from income) as 0.
“Merityötulot ja luontoisedut” Unless you’re employed at sea, you can set everything 0.
“Perhehoitajan palkkio ja kulukorvaus” I don’t even know what this means so set it 0, you’re not going to get your salary in this category.
“Etuudet” (subsidies) If you don’t intend on living on social security, set everything 0.
“Omaishoitajan palkkio” This is if you are at home nursing a disabled spouse or a child or such, leave it 0.
“Muut työkorvaukset” Other money paid from work. Generally leave 0 if you don’t know better.
“Käyttökorvaukset” This only applies in very special cases such as if you have copyright income, so leave 0.
“Eläkkeet” (pensions) leave 0.
“Kustannusten korvaukset (esim. perhepäivähoitajien)” Leave 0.
“Ennakkoveron alaiset ansiotulot” Leave 0
“Osingot listaamattomista yhtiöistä” (Dividend from unlisted companies) Leave 0
“Ylijäämät listaamattomista osuuskunnista” Leave 0
“Opintoraha” Study subisidies, leave 0.
“Pääomatulot” (capital income), if you’re only interested in the taxation of your salary, you can leave the entire section 0.
“Yrittäjän sairaanhoito- ja päivärahamaksuun vaikuttavat tiedot” This only applies if you are a business owner so leave the entire section 0.
**In short**: The only place where you put anything other than zero is under “Koko vuoden arvio”.
“Vähennykset” or deductions. You can leave everything zero if you’re only interested in a rough estimate and don’t know what to put there. You may be eligible to deductions from commute to work and such, but these only kick in if your commute is sufficiently long. Then there are some other kinds of expenses that you may or may not be eligible to deduct, but for a rough estimate, you can just leave everything 0.
**Summary**
Here’s the result that I got with these figures (I’ve highlighted the important bits with bold):
**Laskelma veroista ja maksuista 2022**
**Koko vuonna maksettava vero 15 126,06**
Alkuvuonna maksettu vero 0,00
Loppuvuonna maksettava vero 15 126,06
Loppuvuoden tulot, jotka otetaan huomioon verokortissa 62 500,00
Lasketut veroprosentit 2022
**Veroprosentti 24,5**
Important figures: “koko vuonna maksettava vero”, so that’s the total amount of tax you will pay. “Veroprosentti” is the amount of tax deducted from your salary. The addendum says that in addition to tax, the employer must deduct 7.15% in pension payments and 1.5% for unemployment insurance. So the total tax rate for you (including these tax-like payments) is 24.5% + 8.65% = 33.15%. So this means that if you make a gross salary of 5000 EUR/month, you pay tax at 0.3315*5000EUR = 1657.50 EUR, so **your net pay would be 3342.5 EUR/month** given these figures.
Note that you would be taxed higher if you were a member of the Lutheran church, or if you reside in a municipality with a higher tax rate. Helsinki has one of the lowest tax rates in the country.
It depends on a multitude of things: Chiefly, your municipality and whether you are a member of a church that is allowed to tax you.
In Helsinki and without being a church member, something like 3300 € net is what you should expect. Source: I have a similar wage.
You can possibly get slightly less (monthly, not total over a year!) if you take the holiday bonuses, 50 – 60 % of monthly gross wage sometime around summer, but at similar wage levels I personally just exchange that bonus to more holidays.
What is “Medicare premium” I wonder
Vero has good helplines as well. Just call them. They want you to be able to do this right because it’s also more work for them if you get it wrong. And they want people to know what their obligations are. They won’t start scrutinising you just because you call and ask for information, that’s not how it works here.
I used the second one once when i was trying to figure out my taxes. It’s not accurate. The one from the tax office just needs a bit of practice but you’ll get the hang of it. I believe you can also make an appointment for someone to help you with your taxes too.
But this -> https://relocate.me/net-pay-calculators/finlandSays, for 5000 EUR/m net pay is € 3117.”

That is quite near.
I make 5193,xx /m and get 3238,xx to my bank account. When I ordered my tax card I put a couple of thousands as extra into my expected yearly income. Just in case I do some overwork or get bonus or what ever. I also have some capital income from renting a small storage to someone else ,but that only 2k/year so does not make much difference.
The thing here is that there are some moving parts so no calculator will give you the exact amount until they know where you live.
1. Each town sets its own tax %
2. Depending your religion there is a tax or there is no tax for that church/orwhaterver.
3. There are some age dependent deductions
Also some counters put those insurance payments into the tax % just to keep things simple, others do not.
Here is another very simple calculator which hits quite close.
[https://www.veronmaksajat.fi/luvut/Laskurit/palkansaajan-tuloverolaskuri-2022/](https://www.veronmaksajat.fi/luvut/Laskurit/palkansaajan-tuloverolaskuri-2022/)
Tuloveroaste” is about your taxation % (including unemployment insurances, pension stuff etc..)
The official one is of course preferable, skip what you don’t understand or isn’t relevant for you, I am assuming you need an approximation and not an exact estimate.
With 5k gross I’d recon you’ll get around 3k in hand.
Second one was close. Threw about 100e/month
Use official one to get the percentage, then also account 7.15% for pension (Työeläkemaksu – TYEL) and 1.5% for unemployment insurance (Työttömyysvakuutusmaksu).
If you have a fixed monthly salary it’s quite simple once you get the hang of it. The only info that really matters is your salary for the whole year, municipality you live in, tax year and whether you belong to a parish (select “Civil register” if you don’t).
The other pages are for any extra income that you might have, and also expenses that you might get deductions for (paying for unemployment fund or trade union, paying a housing loan, commuting costs exceeding 750 EUR etc.). If you have none other income just leave those fields empty and fill out only the year salary + holiday money.
Example: A single person with no kids that lives in Helsinki and makes 5000 EUR a month, and pays 118 EUR a year for unemployment fund:
5000 * 12 = 62500 EUR / year
Tax calculator yields a percentage of: 24,5%
so 5000 – (24.5 + 7.15 + 1.5)% = 3342 EUR net salary a month
