What’s the deal with Tans? You don’t get a tan with them?
In fairness Ireland hasn’t been exactly mother Theresa to it’s own people since gaining independence. That’s not to downplay the evil of the British empire.
There are more than enough self flaggelating/loathing Brits to make up for the misty eyed over the empire lads
Is there a difference between the DUP and Fine Gael?
At least Liz Truss is being somewhat honest when she disregards democracy in favour of the shareholders.
I guess you’re all walking around self-flagellating every day over the mother and babies homes, systematic child rape, punishment and beatings of children from the clergy and authorities, filling septic tanks with dead babies, and all the other horrors we did to our own people in the 20th century?
The fucking state of this pathetic post, have you nothing better to do than to try and tell other people that have nothing to do with you how they should feel about things that happened long ago?
Brits: there was a time when the globe was covered in pink, Monghols circa 1200 AD ‘Hold my beer’
Empires crumble so just give it up, FFS just shut up about past victories over tribes armed with sharpened mangoes. Brits got their asses kicked by Boer farmers in SA twice, nah don’t want it now the Boers can have it and boo hiss down with apartheid.
I wonder if the Brits would have the same attitude if they won the Boer wars? ‘Won’ being a loose term as both were invaders both hell bent on erradicating natives for their resources.
It makes sense to be ashamed of one’s own personal history if it’s bad. Doesn’t make any sense to be ashamed of stuff other people did years ago or proud for that matter if you didn’t have any input in it.
Nuff to worry about in the present without worrying about what others have done…
This thinking is reductive and silly. I don’t think they should be ashamed of their history any more than any other country should. There are jingoistic dumbasses over there who look down on everyone, and that is obviously stupid, but why should the average person self-flagellate over things that happened hundreds of years ago? I realise we have a particularly negative view of British/English history because it intersects negatively with ours, but to write the whole lot off because of the bad bits is ridiculous. England produced a great many people and innovations that shaped the modern world we live in now. Advances in computing, chemistry, classical physics, engines, etc were all influenced or founded outright by the Brits. Is it the same few 14 year olds who keep posting these cringe memes?
Fax.
Is this not just a bit pathetic now? As someone with family on both sides and who has lived in both, I get it, Britain and Ireland have dark history, but just seems that, especially on this Reddit group, we can’t help but bring it up literally all the bloody time. Modern people have no say in history, and, generally, I think most people wouldn’t sing the praises of Empire even in Britain (granted, some of the media would let you think otherwise).
Seems like greater, modern problems exist. Shitting on Britain does nothing for us.
