I would advise the Burke siblings to untie themselves from their mother’s apron strings. Having said that, the fellah is entitled to his opinion and to act according to his beliefs. The pupil in this case is still a child. How can he/she be sufficiently mature and informed enough to make such a life changing decision and undergo this “transformation” process? Should there not be a legal age under which this is illegal , similar to the age of consent in sexual relations? The Department Of Education and the board of management of the school concerned are colluding in this process. There is something ethically wrong about all of this, I believe.
