Yes please, people driving those have no regard for other people on the road.
And simply converting car parking spots to bike and scooter spots is not an option of course.
I don’t love the e-scooters, but Brussels its war on cars & now e-scooters doesn’t really make much sense. Public transport has not improved materially in the last 20 years. I don’t see how Brussels will be attractive long-term if they keep decreasing mobility & mobility options.
They take up less space than cars and don’t pollute the environment, how is this a problem ??? Yes some people drive them irresponsibly and there should be a few more laws and rules about the usage but they absolutely should be used in the city.
Studies suggest that the majority of e-scooter users are people who otherwise would have walked.
So no real benefits health or congestion-wise.
While I very much dislike the way e-scooters usually drive, get dumped everywhere, and are environmentally unfriendly, it’s ironic that the commune blocking it is also the commune that has been blocking public transport as well as reduced car traffic in the ‘bois de la cambre’ and where anti-bike activism is most widespread (Uccle is where “L’automobiliste en a marre” has its roots).
It seems like the only way you’re allowed to move in Uccle is by car :/
I regularly use e-scooters and respect the rules. I see many who don’t, as I also see with many cyclists and car drivers.
I feel like e-scooters should remain a component to the mobility solution.
But just like for cars, bikes, or for that matter anything else in Brussels, the authorities don’t seem to be doing hardly anything to punish those that break the rules.
Note that this is exclusively about shared e-scooters. If you have your own this doesn’t affect you.
Given how often the shared ones get left in the middle of the sidewalk or cycle lane I can certainly understand this. Providing dedicated parking spaces might help, but would still require significant enforcement that the operators clearly don’t want to do. I don’t think shared e-scooters add enough value for the authorities to spend the money required to enforce parking requirements, so I’m inclined to agree with this policy.
The amount of people living in one of the most high density countries in both population, car ownership and traffic jams, arguing that this is a good thing, baffles me. Regulatory framework needs to be put in place, sensibilisation/education on how to use em correct on the road and with respect for fellow road users, should be done. However outright banning them in said country seem BEYOND foolish, you are actively arguing to set a precedent to make our traffic jams worse..
U can dislike em all u want, just like I curse when some slowpoke is driving his bike 3km/h in front of me in the car, but ask yourself: would u rather have that person be in a car? Because if not stfu and be happy that they’re on that bike/escooter/whatever.. We desperately need to encourage alternative means of transportation in this country, not discourage it and be like “just walk lmao”… Because the answer to that will be “I’ll just take my car lmao”..
Knew this had to be Uccle just from the post title. Car-obsessed, classist NIMBY commune.
About damn time, they are a PLAGUE
Multiple times I’ve had some asshole go max speed from behind me, pretty much just next to me.
I have no vision on that and in an area where there are no cars, I am quite relaxed. When I’m relaxed then I’ll sometimes take a random step to the side.
Combination of those two = troublesome thought
I’m sure there have been accidents
They ‘tighten the rules’, they ‘discuss with the companies’, they ‘make regulations’. All of which is completely useless. 20.000 of these pieces of trash littering the streets. The sooner they all go, the better.
“mobility landscape”? Don’t make me laugh. It seems a bit strange to talk about mobility when the selfish pricks that use them dump them on pedestrian crossings, in the middle of the pavement, at the very top of an escalator – the list goes on. Fine if you can walk round them and aren’t blind, disabled or a parent with kids in a buggy.
Greenwashed shit, ridden by selfish fucking idiots. Ban them all now. Go Uccle.
That e-scooters are a problem is undeniable. But instead of just banning them I think we should investigate which modes of transport e-scooters are replacing. Were people using them today, using a car, a bike, foot in the past? If it’s a car we should try to solve the e-scooters, like the complete lack of rules. If it’s not a car, they honestly add no value and banning would be good. Problem is, right now I don’t think there is data to say A or B, just a lot of opinions.
There needs to be a little education too. People on bikes are conscious that they take up space, the bike restricts you form some manoeuvres. People on e-scooters feel like pedestrians.
So they act like pedestrians, crossing between cars, on the pavement.
Don’t stop at red lights… Speed past kids.
Good. Whenever I go to Brussels, the pavement is littered with those things.
