Why don’t more cyclists use our perfectly good cycle lanes??

  1. Cycling on the road is oftentimes better than it is to cycle on the bicycle lanes for exactly this reason.

I’d say it’s safer to stay on the road than it is to keep entering and leaving it on awkward curbs and paths like that.

But most people wouldn’t even realise how bad it can be unless they actually have used the bicycle lanes.

  2. Because you very often run into random signpost poles. It’s bloody dangerous… just look at the pic!

  3. In fairness even when the cycle lane is perfectly good, cyclists still don’t use them.

    I’ll take my downvotes now.

  4. Drivers don’t realise how absolutely dire our cycling infrastructure is. A lot of it seems to be intentional too.

[This](https://maps.app.goo.gl/nTscLaUsBEj799n79) is one of my favourite examples. Cyclists get a traffic calming chicane while cars get a large, broad road with parking lanes and a high speed limit. Why the fuck are they intentionally slowing down cyclists when the cars are allowed a road big enough that only *one in ten motorists actually obey the speed limit*?

  5. If all Road users could put their divisions aside and unite against the common enemy, the council, we could get alot more achieved.

  6. Looks like Ballycullen! I never use the cycle lanes all along that road, they’re ridiculous. The way they end at the roundabouts along the road is terrible as well.

  7. Probably because they still prefer to used the road. It’s safer, plus you don’t have people in your way, who refuse to move, therefore making you stop.

  8. Near glenageary roundabout there’s a very short cycle lane that basically ends as you have to take the roundabout. For some reason it diverts you up a bit to a road crossing for pedestrians with no link at all between the roundabout and the cycle lane that links to it. It’s just a very awkward rigmarole because you have to cycle up on to the footpath from a weird position to cross over to another footpath to eventually get back on the road

  9. Because they prefer to use their cars to get to work – have you even TRIED cycling from Clontarf to Citywest? Can’t use M50, or N4 or N7, it’s a sure way to the ICU..

  10. I really wish they’d get rid of cycle lanes and just widen the road.

Every time I’ve ever seen cycle lanes adjacent to roads all the rubbish and rubble gets cleaned off the road by the cars and directly into the cycle lanes which aren’t maintained.

And then you have things like in the picture.

Anyone seen the cycle lanes out the killorglin Road from killarney? They’re up and down off curbs constantly. It’s mad.

  11. I can’t speak with knowledge of all cycle lanes, and I can’t speak for all cyclists. But I can say many of the cycle lanes near me were haphazardly thrown at the sides of the road – where the road surface dips down and is uneven, sometimes the road surface unravels, and where the drains are. They’re hard enough to navigate. Sometimes I just cycle on the road even when there’s a substantial section of cycle lane. But never the footpath.

  12. You’re just showing us the end of the lane, what’s the condition of it before this point and how long does it last?

  13. I still find myself dreaming of the early lockdown commute to work, got very used to all roads being cycle roads most of the time 😌

  14. Because the cycle lanes are usually strewn with road signs, traffic cones, pedestrians, blown out tyres, and all manner of detritus. Also, they’re often incomplete, poorly designed/laid out, and overhung by unruly hedges and undergrowth.

  16. They’ve spent 2 years laying a cyling lane along Grange Road in South Dublin. 2 years later its only covers half the road and is so obscure cars accidentally drive up on to it.
Unbelievable how wrong the council can get it constantly, no accountability then for whoever designed it.

  17. Because they’re usually badly built, full of glass and other shite that the corpo/council never cleans up. More often than not they terminate in some weird (unsafe) way at a junction where you’re left with no where to go or you have to keep entering and exiting the lane and into/out of traffic. If they are properly constructed, safe and clean they’ll be used.

  18. Lol same issues in the UK. I know its technically illegal but I’d much prefer to stay on the pavement. I’ve been hit by cars when they’re in the wrong before twice, it out me off riding on the road.

  19. I cycle to and from work every day and prefer to use the road. Those bike lanes in Limerick are like a HotWheelz track. Some of which just have dead ends lol.

  20. Not seeing the issue here?

The cycle lane has ended and to continue your route, you now need to turn right and enter onto the road.

  21. ours ends like less than a metre from a roundabout. They legit expect you to swerve into traffic just before the roundabout, while everyone is already distracted choosing which lane to drive in because they can’t figure out how to use a roundabout.

So yes, I refuse to use the bike lanes, and gladly endure the angry honks instead of putting mine and everyone else life in danger.
