New environment minister Ranil Jayawardena has voted against climate measures

  1. That he voted along party lines, probably with a whip in place in many cases, doesn’t really prove anything. It would be notable if he was in a minority of dissenting Conservative MPs, but this isn’t news.

  2. It would be quicker and easier to just assume all ministers were ideologically opposed to the success of whatever facet of the state or society their portfolio covers

  3. Truss is not appointing people because they are right for the job, she is appointing those who stood by her and are her friends. You are looking at the wrong Cabinet if you are after people who were hired based on merit.

  4. So?

Who’s the say he wouldn’t vote the other way now. People are allowed to either change or not change their position on matters, when given new information between votes. Maybe he’ll vote against climate measures again given the opportunity, or maybe he’ll change his tune and vote for climate measures. Only time will tell.
