So many panels in Belgium, but elsewhere as well – even more so in less progressive nations – are composed only of old white men.

Those people (I recognize some in the picture) are some of the most studied lawyers in familierecht.
On the other hand, there are other people who could have brought some diversity and some insights on family law, because it’s a matter where social diversity is extremely important. (Jehanne Sosson, a longtime co-teacher with Jean-Louis Renchon -pictured right- would have been perfectly appropriate, and I hope she got invited).
Belgian Family Law, though one of the most socially-aware disciplines in law, still suffers from many forms of discriminations known in higher circles of academia.
But even though I am a defender of affirmative action and all around left-leaning equalitarian (I hated studying Renchon’s courses cause he would suggest deeply transphobic texts from pseudo-intellectual French philosophers), I think taking this panel as a sign that times aren’t improving is a little in bad faith. It takes a long time to make a reputation in Law and in academia, and as it is based on publications, merits and other experiences, people stay at their place for a long time. There are thousands of panels with younger experts where a lack of diversity is far less excusable.
What am I supposed to see ?
I mean, they have to die out first before we can invite newer folks. Expertise is generally several generations behind.

Sick of these so called woke reverse discrimination.
I don’t know these men. For all I know they are by right the best in the field. Maybe they are maybe they aren’t. How is this any better or worse than putting people of different ethnicities or gender in there just for the sake of diversity? This woke society hangt echt vierkant mn kloten uit.
To think that old white men are discriminatory is just as discriminatory.
