My dad’s sending some stuff over from the states but was wondering if I’m gonna end up also paying a fee to Tulli when it arrives in the country? Already paid a hefty price for shipping but not sure if that also covers Tulli if they end up fining me, shipped through Fedex. Got this message from Tulli:
Terveisin FedEx

FedEx usually will charge / collect vat (including shipping fee) and duty and a fee unless the sender sent it with all charges and duties met by sending party.
FedEx info is in English – change language at the bottom of the page. Just checked your link.
Edit: any ‘gifts’ are potentially liable. Did you miss this on the customs web? https://tulli.fi/en/private-persons/gifts
If your shipping receipts don’t state customs charges are included, and at what price, they’re most likely not included. Shipping from the States to here is not cheap.

Yes you need to put the shipment through customs and pay taxes for it, this is the same for any shipment coming from outside EU. This message you got is telling you you have a shipment coming and it needs to be put through customs. You have to pay VAT for the items, usually 24% but it’ll tell you for each item. You can clear it yourself or appoint FexEx to do it for you, but FedEx will charge you for the service.

The first link is for when you do the custom clearance yourself, reminds you to mark FedEx as the shipping company, then there’s the Tulli service number if you need information/advice. If you want FedEx to do it, email them (email address) and remember to include your first and last name and your SSN. This email address will also give you more information if needed, and the FedEx website link is for more information on FedEx customs clearance including service charges they charge for doing the clearance for you.

If you don’t do this clearance and pay the taxes, the package will not be allowed into the country. You can take it up with FedEx afterwards if you believe you paid them with the shipping price, but if this isn’t paid, you won’t get the package.
If the cost of the gift exceeds 45€, you will need to pay both customs, vat and post handling fees. Regardless of the price, you will need to declare the gift and are expected to be able to provide a detailed description of the parcel and its contents, as well as, how much did the shipping cost (if you need to pay customs, the shipping costs are added to the vat).
I recently had a package sent to me from the US (a gift from friends). All I had to pay was the posti handling fee! only a few €.
Make sure you have a way to accept the package though…hopefully you already have Finnish banking credentials!!
