Why do people think this sub is Google? Mods, can you please weed out this horseshit so that this sub isn’t 90% random foreigners asking stupid questions? (I say that as a random foreigner myself).

  1. A good 70-80% of this sub has turned into top-3 results of a Google search.

I don’t mind people asking questions or advise as long as it is something more specific like laws, culture, and so on Things that might be hard to find or not available in English. But just the sheer amount of “Can I see the northern lights in Oslo mid day in June?” level of questions is absurd. This really fals into rule 5.

Also rule 4 and 6 is broken several times a day.

  2. “Why do Norwegians let babies sleep in the cold…”

Because wool is a thing and it’s fucking cold.

I agree. These threads are absolutely stupid.

  3. The best one is Americans falling in love with Bergen because they went the only sunny day in the month and are asking how to move there.

    (I’m a foreigner too)

  4. First, I 100% agree this is annoying and a lot of the posts are a quick search away. However, keep in mind your search results are based on algorithms trained with years of giving you good results. Obviously, if you have lived in Norway the last 20 years, you are going to get super precise search results. If a guy from India wants to see northern lights in Trondheim in two weeks, it’s not certain the results will guide him in the right direction (I mean, probably it will, but still).

  5. I agree. We need to get this channel shut down in good old Norwegian fashion where everyone sits in their corner and shuts up. Just like what we get taught from birth.

  6. I have recently moved to Norway and this sub has been extremely helpful for me. But it is hard to deny that some really rediculous questions make it through moderation.

Either way I am happy that it exists and has mods that filter out the worst 😊

  7. My thoughts exactly…. «Could someone make me a travel itinerary for 14 days in Norway?» 🤯

EDIT: wtf downvoting me for agreeing with the post?!?

  8. People like anecdotal experiences(when they have questions)rather than what some corporate article says. (not saying that’s the case with the northern lights question lol)

  9. They probably already googled it and didn’t get any satisfying answers. The phone network one specifically always comes with like 30 different answers from the companies, so that information is debatable at the very least.

  10. Idk, it’s an English speaking forum about Norway on one of the largest websites in the world.

Imo if someone wants a forum about Norway for people that live here, they should be speaking Norwegian and just go to /r/norge

(I say this as an American in Norway for a year. Norsk er ikke vanskelig, og du kan lære det hvis du vil. It just takes a moderate amount of work at first.)

In my opinion this will never be a good forum for Norwegians, immigrants or locals, just because of the optics on reddit. And the description is literally “a subreddit for anything to do with Norway!” I can see why they post it.

  11. Some of the questions I can understand asking here as Google is unlikely to return many results in English for things like Norwegian cell phone providers, power companies or banks; our comparison sites for those things are also in Norwegian. Our main classifieds site (finn.no) is in Norwegian.

But the answers to many travel questions are often one site away, like on visitnorway.com or just using Google maps. I look up weather stats on AccuWeather before traveling if I’m trying to get an idea of the climate I’m going to.
