«Stabbur» – old food storage houses. They were built on stilts to prevent foxes and rodents from getting in.
Thats so strangers traveling in the night will have somewhere to sleep if it rains. They can crawl under the house and ride out the storm.

Notice how the legs are built to make it impossible for mice to climb up. Also the steps are placed too far away for mice to jump across. Back in the day it was death penalty if you got caught stealing from one of these houses.
my BFF used to live in a stabbur. she catsat for me one weekend and my kitty apparently fell down the ladder to the loft. he was perfectly fine, but she swears it’s the funniest thing she’s ever seen lulllll
As mentioned yoy need to get the floor well above ground. Another thing to add: flat land is not an easy find in Norway, especially the further in the land you go. (Setesdal is famous for their «stabbur») So a lot of old buildings/cabins/stabbur have stilts that are buildt in different heights so you can build av even ground floor.
Stabbuuuuuur
These are old houses people used to live in/store food in etc. No one uses them anymore but they remain from the old times. We have a lot of them in my family. Some of them are protected, especially older ones that are hundreds of years old. Some are made into exhibitions. They’re probably built the way they are for the Same reason you see the modern house beside it have a concrete base. This was just the old way of doing it.
Often when you see these types of buildings, They are maybe anywhere from 50-250 years Old (or maybe more) depending on care and quality of the Wood 🙂 I am a carpenter who works a lot with “tradtional” buildings, and I always make sure to appreciate these types og buildings!
We absolutely hate dwarfism in Norway. We believed all little people were goblins and trolls, so we made our houses on stilts so they couldnt get in
