As a Polish kid living in the UK I’ve had this exact same scenario happen to me on multiple occasions, these days I’ve picked up a North Welsh accent and I never speak Polish in public, but now that I’m an adult and I see this type of shit I always intervene, it’s honestly sad and disgusting that no one wanted to help that poor man 🙁
