Anyone who wants to take a dive into the history of the famine, check out the Behind the Bastards podcast. I knew that the famine caused so much death due to the British exporting the majority of the food out of the country, but from listening to that podcast, there were other decisions that lead to so many deaths that I didn’t know about, and the lead up to what caused it really boiled my piss.
What’s almost as bad as them exporting all the grain and meat from Ireland
The acting Prime Minister at the time Robert Peel (I think) set up a form of relief in road works / infrastructural work, a lot of it mostly useless tasks purely because his constituents were unhappy with the Irish receiving handouts for nothing. So then people had to work for their food in order to receive some form of relief
Then private landlords abused this scheme, and had Irish peasants carrying out work on their “private” lands, making roads, building walls, building bridges etc at the expense of British government and Irish peasant labour, and then they also took a cut of the relief grain too.
The grain was unprocessed maize too, which was impossible to eat unless it was cooked in boiling water like a filthy soup
Imagine that, the only form of relief or act of sympathy from a person in power in the British government, and it’s taken advantage of by private landowners, who didn’t even have to pay for the land, they just moved in and made whoever was already living on that land move out to dirty quagmires or arable land. Or else they could continue living in a slum on the land for extortionate rent. Disgusting
The succeeding prime minister John Russell, refused intervention, as it was gods judgement on the filthy Irish. He refused to comment on whether it was also gods judgement to export all of our food supplies to Britain during this time
Lest we forget, there are still some of the British Elite who thing like this, despite their family coming from a colony in only the previous generation – Priti Patel.
