I’m a trauma surgeon – many of my patients are suicide attempts because they can’t afford to eat

  1. This is a poorly written article…it doesn’t have a singular focus or a point…rather it flits from an anecdotal sob story about somebody killing themselves “because they can’t afford to eat” (as somebody that used to work in healthcare I highly doubt that was the *only* or even most important reason they tried offing themselves), to the war in Ukraine, to “protecting people in a crisis”, to leadership…He elaborates on nothing and what point is he trying to make? If his leadership style is as scatterbrained as his writing style I’d be worried. Sounds like it was a token 500 or so words just to support the sensationalist headline to try and blame the Tories for something or the other. SAD!

  2. Things WILL get better guys. They might get worse before but they will get better. Economic downturns are temporary!

Edit: Let me put something into perspective for the doomsday crew, in the last century London has been completely levelled, we’ve been at risk of nuclear war, had a similar experience with stagflation in the 70s and also had the GFC in 2008, and yet we are still here and thriving. If you think Russian gas will be the downfall of the west then I suggest picking up a book. Chill out and stop feeding into your emotions.

  3. I’m assuming said trauma surgeon is quite happy to charge the NHS an extortionate amount for his services and isn’t worried about feeding himself. But sure, it’s everyone else’s fault.

  4. Tanking our own economy to fight a proxy war in Ukraine. We’ve ended up crippling our own country through sanctions on Russia. Real high quality governance

  5. I think a little discussed aspect of suicide is that most attempts aren’t successful and often result in brain injustices and musculoskeletal or gastrointestinal trauma. There’s ironically an argument to be made for assisted suicide on compassionate grounds for survivors of suicide attempts
