Martin Lewis left with head in hands as Edwina Currie offers energy saving tips

  1. She is a moron, unpacking

“I didn’t have central heating growing up so you can survive”
Ignores that houses had open fires for heat, and so we really want to go back to the 50s and earlier

“Foil behind the rad” is a minor improvement which doesn’t touch the sides of the cost increase

    “Stop calling it a catastrophe”
What the hell do you call a price rise which is this enormous?

  2. > During an exchange on Twitter, Ms Currie said he should “stop pretending that governments can do everything”.

Oh, we’ve long since given up on *that* forlorn hope. The most we expect from Government these days is that’d actually do **something**. And we’re bitterly disappointed by that low standard not being met too.

  3. Putting foil behind your radiator means you can turn your thermostat down… That’s not how thermostats work. If this trick actually did anything then the room would presumably reach the temperature on the thermostat quicker and save you energy without having to adjust it.

  4. She’s always full of good ideas! Last spring/year on the Jeremy Vine show she told a single mother, who was living paycheque to paycheque that if she just went to her boss he’d most likely give her a car to get to work in if she’d only just ask! Well, to be fair, this advice was for anyone struggling who’s poor. I’m sure many people benefitted from this great advice! What a loon!

  5. Personally I like to pin some rashers of bacon on my foil before I put it behind the radiator, saving on cooking costs as well.

That way I can enjoy a nice rubbery semi cooked bacon sarnie, whilst I lament over the soaring cost of living in the dark.

  6. Translation…. The best way to stay warm is have millions in the bank and access to an expense account

  7. The thing is, ignoring edwina for a moment. In the light of the fact that the UK government are not really going to do anything meaningful apart from some handouts adapting to the current situation is a good idea.

There are things you can do to try and reduce heat loss and also save on turning on your heating. i.e. wearing more clothes (get some thermals) rather than putting the heating on, only heating a smaller part of the house, cling film over single pane windows is a good idea as well as reflection foil behind radiators etc.. They are all small things but every bit helps.

It’s all a bit grim but most people cannot go on as normal.

So batten down the hatches and wait for the next election and don’t forget to vote then maybe we have a chance of getting some grown ups in charge.

  8. The Tories are like this can of compressed foam that you spray and they fill the available space with hissing sounds and rapidly solidifying plastic sponge until the space is all taken.

  9. This is embarrassing. Lecturing Martin Lewis on money managing. Holy fuck. The abductor from this upper class lunatic.

EDIT: I meant audacity not abductor but I’ll leave it as it is, because why not 😃

  10. The Guardian talks on their podcast about how churches and community centres are putting on events which are a warm room and a chat so that people can save on bills.

People on their within the Tory party saying “we had to chose between food and heating when we were growing up, people have it too easy these days”

And people on here pretend that because the Labour party has SKS we shouldn’t vote for them instead of Truss and hope and pray for a Labour government.

So you know what Tony Blair achieved in the last Labour government????

  11. just another out of touch rich snob who wont be affected. she has absolutely no idea what its gonna be like for very low income households and doesnt care.

  12. Ms Currie is not the brightest spark in the world, and with the current electric prices, not even in England…

  13. Edwina was great mates with Jimmy Savile and rubber stamped his access to Broadmoor.

Surprised she isn’t encouraging people to install a government approved paedophile in their home this winter, so the kids can keep warm trying to fend them off.

  14. The fact she bought some of that just to bring on the show, because she really thought she was going to show us all we are overreacting. What an idiot.

Old people like this are just the worst. “We didn’t have heating back in my day and we managed”. Well we have heating now because it’s 60+ years in the future and we shouldn’t have to worry about going into debt just to use it. And I’m sure back in their day they had fires which helped keep their houses warm, most homes now don’t have fireplaces.

  15. What’s the obsession with Edwina among the media? Cheap booking? Surely they can dig up some former cabinet member who has served in living memory.
